The Rangers and Hurricanes seem to have softer schedules down the stretch, whereas the Leafs have one of the tougher ones.

Honestly tho, Raycroft isn't playing that bad. I think he's like 5 wins away from the team record for wins in a season. I mean really, how can you blame him for losses when he only let's 2 goals in but the forwards don't score?

Or when he's facing 45 + shots with no support in front of him?

I really think the leaf's problem with them running hot and freezing cold is that there are so many young players they don't have the "team spirit" yet. I mean, I saw them against Montreal and some were just drifting around to pickup the puck in their end allowing Montreal forecheckers to pounce. If you're fighting for your playoff life you'd better show some hussle.

Same as for sloppy passes and sloppy receiving. If the pass isn't perfectly placed on their stick, they lose it and same as for the passing, the passer's are just tossing it at the team mate instead of clean passing.

Against buffalo the other night the passes were stick to stick and those guys were mostly AHL players and they made the leafs look like Junior B's.....

the only reason he's so close to the team record for wins (and it ain't that close by the way- only 10 games left) is because he's played so much.

he is a good goalie. he's young at 26 and has room to get better.

but like guyroch says, in order for the leafs to be successful, they need a Luongo or Brodeur... And also, a M-A Fleury, Cam Ward or Rick Dipietro simply isn't good enough for the leafs.

. Oh the one that is a joke is win and loss record ... Goalie
gets credit for shoot out / overtime win but in the loss column it is ignored if he losses that game ..
It actually makes sense but in a stupid way. The same stupid way that even when a team "loses" they still get a point. The same stupid way some games are worth two points in the standings and some are worth three points.

See? It's very logical when it's looked at in the context of an illogical system.

For a starting goaltender Raycroft is well below average as a shootout goalie.

For the second year in a row there's a good chance the Leafs will miss the playoffs because their goalie performed poorly in the skills competition, ie overtime shootouts.

the shootout is quickly becoming a good way to identify the quality of goaltender you have.

Raycroft isn't the best on shootouts, but not the worst either. however, if the leafs had 3 consistent shootout specialists... they'd be higher than 8 seed right now.

Yeah, but was I the only one who thought right after they scored the second goal, how long before New Jersey scores? The next jersey rush into the leaf zone I thought "oh no, here we go, they're going to score" and surprise surprise, they did. 40 seconds later. It was like as a team, they relaxed after the second goal and let their guard down. When the jersey player came down the boards it was like no one on the leafs wanted to hit him so he just danced around all the statues.....

At least one thing: tonight they played like they were actually fighting for that last playoff spot instead of a team that was securely in second place like they have been.

I'll somewhat disagree here, Tboy

....the let up was more by Raycroft, the player coming down the boards was no threat..until he throws a wrist shot at the net that Raycroft serves back on a platter into the slot..and guess where it ends up??..

This is the frustrating part about Raycroft...it's not like he casn't make some tough saves...but he always lets a softie in at the most inopportune times.

The road to a playoff spot is still a very tough one...10 games to go for the Leafs....they need at least 14 points.....and most of the teasm tehy are playing are ahead of them in the standings...Nice win...but no letdowns now...

He didn't say they were world beaters but they're the best we've got (Blue Jays pending) and least they're competitive and in the playoffs.

un fucking real.

Cough up a 4-1 lead in the 3rd.

They dont deserve the playoffs.
The Maple Leafs were playing with desperation for the first two periods. Then, unfortunately, they went out of gas in the third period. The Sabres exploded in the third period with 4 goals and the Leafs just did not have enough left to counter. Unfortunately, the desperate team could not win tonight. Perhaps they committed a strategic mistake by going too hard in the first two periods.

I wouldnt go that far, for the first 2 periods they were clearly the better team.

It's the PP goals in the 3rd that killed them, even though Briere's didnt count as a PP goal it occurred at the tail end.

Buffalo turned up the speed and Toronto simply couldnt keep up.

Well in defence of Raycroft it is kind of hard to beat a 3 on 1.....and where was the defence on Brier's last goal? he had about 6 whacks at it before it went in....

BTW: yet again the officiating SUCKED. SO many missed calls, hooks, high sticks, and that totally obvious slash on antropov that allowed the 4th goal.....jesus.

Anyhow, just wanted to add:

LOSERS

They played like an NHL team in the 1st and 2nd but after those insurance goals they turned into a 4th string AHL team. ALL they had to do was play keepaway for 13 minutes and they would have won......

Their goalie had to face 19 shots and kept his team in it and our goalie

save our ass ..
One may say that Miller kept the Sabres in the game when he had to. Raycroft was less than stellar in the third period. In defense of Raycroft, if the Toronto players could help out the goalie during the game, they might still come out ahead.
