If I were JFJ, I would get Sabre’s Briere, who will be available, at all cost. This guy is lightening quick, a great play maker, goal scorer and clutch player - the missing piece of Leafs. As good as Sundin may appear statistically or as made out to be by the Toronto media, he is no match to this guy. Briere is the franchise player of any team and he is young with years of promising career ahead of him.

....

In addition, taking Briere from the Sabres will weaken its division rival considerably.
Very well, at least let the Sabres win the Stanley Cup this time before the Leafs lure him away with dollar signs will you??? ;) LOL!!!

I wont say Briere is over-rated, but I dont think he's worth top dollar given his career thus far. Only his last 2 seasons has he been this good, and I think he is playing well because it's his contract year, which many athletes seem to do. Look at Chris Drury, same thing, contract year. Sabres probably cant keep both, and I wouldnt want Briere on Toronto.

Perfectly said ... This is their first round of the playoffs ... Seven games
and they have to win at least 5 of them ..
It is tough position to be in. They have to play every game as a must win game. That may get them somewhere.

You see as a Leaf fan this is hard .... Everyone wants the Leafs to make the playoffs cause nothing is like NHL playoffs with Leafs in it ... So of coarse
a bit of me is cheering for them but if they don't make the playoffs this city
may go nuts and that may give MLSE enough of a head shake so that they fire JFJ and replace him with someone that Leaf nation trusts and has done it somewhere else ..
Please do not frame yourself into a false dilemma. The Leafs can still go to playoffs if they win enough games and with some help from their competitors. MLSE may still be wise enough to fire JFJ and proceed to restructure the Leafs into a more promising team. You can certainly have your cake and eat it too, my friend. ;) LOL!!!

FYI: MLSE won't do much even if the city goes nuts if they don't make it.

Why? Because games keep getting sold out, people pay the high prices to see the leafs, and they keep making money.

So why should they go out and do anything drastic to try and win games/playoffs/trophies? They are making money hand over fist now so why spend more or work harder?

Nothing will change and the leafs won't go anywhere near the semi or final series until the fans stop going to games and season ticket holders start protesting.

Here's a great example: edmonton has been in financial trouble for the past 5 (?) yrs and they went to the final last year.

Philly is on the ropes and looking for a buyer and look at how well they're doing this year?

I was working in the ACC offices last spring and has anyone been up there? F me, rosewood panelling, lots of stainless steel, all posh and comfy. Hell, they're reaping windfalls now so what do they care whether they win or lose? Fact is: they don't because they make money whether they win or lose (just like stock brokers). They need someone to own the team who cares about winning, what does a teachers retirement fund care about winning? Nothing, all they care about is making money and that's what they're doing.....

The worse possible thing happend today for the Leafs ... Rangers and Islanders went into extra time so each team got a point ..
Before the game I was discussing with my son who the Leafs should cheer for in this game. We decided that it was impossible to tell, only that somebody should win in regulation.

Afterwards I told my son it was better this way so that when the Leafs do make the playoffs (yeah, right) they'll have more confidence having overcome greater odds. What a fantasy.

You nailed it TBOY. I said it two years ago at the beginning of the year...they wouldn't make the playoffs. All the Laff nation ridiculed me. Now for the second of many years to come they are on the outside looking in. With the salary cap they can't mask there ineptitude by going out at the trade deadline and picking up a bunch of overpaid has-beens to win a playoff round or two. The playing field has been leveled and it has revealed their glaring shortcomings in managment, drafting, scouting and coaching. But like you said, where's the motivation to change all that. They are making money hand over fist. April and May come around and all the Directors can head up to their posh cottages in the Muskokas without having to worry about showing up at any playoff games.

Good Post Nav and as for the CBC: they will be covering the sens, flames and canucks so they lost 4 or 5 leaf games (first round loss will be guaranteed if they do in fact get in)? BFD.....I bet they made a hell of a lot more money from the edmonton series' last year than they've made from the leafs in the past 3.

As for MLSE losing out on the revenues from playoff home games. Again I say BFD. It costs money and time to open the ACC to extra games, not including the travel costs, player wages, staff wages at the acc, utilities etc etc etc. This all takes an investment of time and energy in order to gain those dollars. Bottom line is they are making money without expending all that extra energy. As long as they continue to make money, nothing will change.

Look at all the top players in the league and the up and comers: they all come from the Toronto area. We're the top market in Canada (arguably), we've got the biggest fan base, we've got the largest TV market share, we've got the longest history (tied with the Habs) but we can't field a serious cup contender for what, 20 yrs? WTF.......

how many 'must wins' can we swallow?

i left for Pittsburgh on Friday and came back today to find the Leafs in an even worse predicament...

but, hey, they don't have problems like Boston.

man, have they ever given up... or atleast it looked like it on Sunday vs. Pens.

ummm this little known fella by the name of, oh, what was it? Wayne Getsky, Geshy, something like that (for one), a youngster by the name of Tavares for two, (sorry thought Crosby played in the S. Ontario Juniors), Joe Thorton (remember I said toronto area and since we're the closest NHL franchise I include of of southern, northern and south western ontario in that "area").

OK, I will admit that I shouldn't have said "all", I should have said many or some, but you do have to admit, a lot of good players come from Ontario... I stand corrected.

I only know remember that cause everytime the Canadian Jrs are picked the OHL is usually ignored ... They say we have quanity but not quality ..
Not true at all. It is usually the QMJHL that has the least amount of players on the World Junior team. It is usually fairly even between the WHL and OHL. Here is a breakdown for the past several years of each league and how many players were on Team Canada. There have been a lot of OHL stars on the past teams:

2007: OHL 8 WHL 7 QMJHL 4
2006: OHL 7 WHL 7 QMJHL 3
2005: OHL 5 WHL 14 QMJHL 2
2004: OHL 6 WHL 10 QMJHL 4
2003: couldn't get a roster
2002: OHL 9 WHL 9 QMJHL 2
2001: Had to estimate, looks like OHL had 7
1999: OHL 9 WHL 10 QMJHL 2
1998: OHL 7 WHL 7 QMJHL 7

You can look it up yourself if you like.

generally speaking, the Q has always been a little more diluted in talent than the the O and the Whl.

in the Q, there is 18 teams with a much smaller pool to draft talent from... the O & W have 16 teams and a similar pool of talent to derive players from.

either way, elite talent comes from all parts of the country.

The OHL has 20 teams, WHL has 21 and yes, there are 18 in the Q
