That was a hilarious game watching the Leafs suffer thru that comebackby Buffalo. I took great pleasure in watching it. The save Miller made on Sundin at the end was amazing.

Leafs get pumped at home tomorrow, and then it's play out the string.

Suckers.

After that debacle it's getting close to the time that the title of this thread should be changed to Gone Leafs Gone.

It is SO typical for the leafs to die in the third period. Don't know what it is about them but as a team, it looked like they ALL sat back on their heels after that 4th goal.

I mean really, all they had to do was play keepaway and they would have won.

Against any other team, (except maybe Ottawa) I'd feel comfortable with them having a 3 goal lead in the 3rd and still winning. But even at 4-1, my gut told me they'd find a way to lose this game, and surely they did. Had they lost say 5-2 or something, that wouldnt have been as bad. But to lose 5-4, with a 4-1 lead in the 3rd, has to be so disheartening, how do you bounce back from that? I suppose the answer is you dont!

Despite that crap loss, they are still only 2 pts out...they need to somehow win tonight.

I bow to your superior knowledge, Roach.

Mr. Guyroach, you have been criticizing Raycroft for some time now, and I have been his great defender. I have come on board today to say this:

I WAS WRONG AND YOU WERE RIGHT.

I see last night's game exactly the way you have stated. A stellar 2 periods and 4 mins by the Buds. Is there anyone here who questions who the more talented and gifted team is???....We all knew that at some point, the Sabres wee going to make a run at it..just listen to what Ruff told his guys after 2 periods...go after it guy, we have nothing to lose, and they have everything to lose.....and this is the kind of game where a 2.5 Mil goalkeepe earns his keep..and Raycroft failed miserably...

But he is not alone in the failure dept. Paul Maurice needs to take a lot of heat for this too. A casual fan could see the wheels coming off..but does he take a timeout to try to settle the group down??...NO

And a miserable failure by Sundin, Poni,Antropov,Tucker, and O'Neill...Tucker and O'Neill were invisible. And if I hear one more time about the cycling prowess of the top line , I'm gonna puke. That cycling bullshit is what 4th lines do to kill time, and keep the puck away from the oppositions 1st line guys. Chip in with a garbage goal now and then . A #1 line is supposed to have firepower and skill. And the Leafs #1 line is woefully lacking in both. Put some kind of sharpshooter with Sundin, and quit making him play that 4th line style play with his 4th line capeable wingers

And BTW, Vaive and Millen can stop suckin Raycrofts ass....they said he was in no way responsible for this loss.. BULLSHIT !!..that goal from the wing by Vanek...bad angle by Raycroft...a good goalie would have given him no net..on the other goal..where they got 3 hacks at it..cover the rebound..and a scrub like Pomainville writs one over your shoulder...yes defensive breakdowns for sure...but make a damn save buddy...look what Miller did in that 3rd period..

...Yes , a long rant. but the season is over for the Leafs don'tya know...

It's the PP goals in the 3rd that killed them, even though Briere's didnt count as a PP goal it occurred at the tail end.
Briere should have received a penalty for slashing & breaking Kubina's stick when they were going for a loose puck just before Briere scored.

You are SO right about that....but I do have to ask:

Why even BOTHER winning any more games? I mean, we saw what will happen to them in the playoffs last night so even if they make the first round, they won't last the first round......

I was just thinking probably what happened is after that 4th goal they were all high fiving themselves and strutting around thinking they were all that and a bag of chips and how they were trashing the mighty sabres. While they were doing that the sabres served up a great big can of whoopass.

I am a Leaf fan and I could not even read the sports today. However, whatever reason we want to come up with, if they can not hold a lead of 3 goals with 15 minutes to go, in a game that was this important, they do not deserve to be anywhere but the golf course.

Tonight Raycroft redeemed himself with his stellar performance. He turned back quite a few good scoring chances from the Sabres. The desperate team deserved to win, no doubt. This time the Sabres were the ones sleep-walking again, as they often did. Just don't see how they can realize their dream of being a Stanley Cup Champion at their present condition.

I hear ya. I could only relax when there was about 5 minutes remaining. If the Marlies make the playoffs it will be stressfull to watch. However, I love playoff time. Up and down, up and down........ We live for this in TO.

..he made some quality saves...did a GOOD job...standing on his head??...Scenicdrive used stellar???....hardly..the guy faced 20 shots ...out of those mabe 10 chances to score..I think that is at or belowwhat an average game would have. I would call Raycrofts performance solid, and certainly for all of them, quite impressive, considering Fri night's loss. But had they defeated Washington, last Friday, taken the 2nd point from Montreal last Saturday, and not blown Fri game, they would be firmly in a spot, at 87 points...Now I know a lot of you are gonna say "and if my aunt had a dick, she'd be my uncle"..but really, those are the points they pissed away in one week , that ultimately will be their demise...

Well good to see they bounced back.

Unfortunately everyone ahead of them won again, except Tampa Bay.

If they miss by 2 points, I'm sure you could point to a lot of games, but yesterdays game will be fresh in the heads of many!

LOL!!! 'Stellar' is an honorific term but obviously not absolute. So Raycroft is stellar relative to Miller, who was chased from net. Bear in mind, the Leafs were playing a team who was half asleep. They might not win this game if they played Ottawa tonight, for instance. Then Raycroft might not be steller at all. Perhaps the game of hockey is not the place for philosophical investigation of meaning of meaning of words, when players care more about fighting than thinking. ;) LOL!!!

Despite this win, Toronto has not gained ground in the playoff race when the Rangers, Islanders, Canadiens, and Hurricanes all won tonight. They just have not lost more ground like the Sabres did, when the Devils and the mighty Senators all won in the same evening.

Toronto has these games left:

vs Carolina
@ Atlanta
vs Pittsburgh
@ New York Rangers
vs Philadelphia
@ New York Islanders
vs Montreal

so 4 games vs everyone ahead of them...should be an interesting finish.

Whether Leafs get to the playoff or not is not important; they won’t go far anyway with the roster it has. This said, however, I think the Leafs have the role players and youth to be a contender if JFJ could get them a couple of natural goal scorers.

If I were JFJ, I would get Sabre’s Briere, who will be available, at all cost. This guy is lightening quick, a great play maker, goal scorer and clutch player - the missing piece of Leafs. As good as Sundin may appear statistically or as made out to be by the Toronto media, he is no match to this guy. Briere is the franchise player of any team and he is young with years of promising career ahead of him.

OK. He won’t be cheap. If JFJ needs to dump half of the Leafs to make cap room for Briere, he should do so. Get rid of O’Neill ($2 mil); Peca ($2 mil); Tod Gill ($2 mil, and Leafs do have young defensive prospects to replace Gill). This will yield over $6 million. Together with the expanded cap room anticipated for the next season, Leafs could offer some $10 million for this guy. He is worth it and the Leafs need him if they want to be a true contender.

In addition, taking Briere from the Sabres will weaken its division rival considerably.
