My understanding when it comes to free agency is that teams are allowed to negotiate with pending free agents 48 hours in advance for NHL and NBA players and 72 hours for NFL players. I might be wrong though.
So, it's not unreasonable to think both parties expressed a mutual interest prior to the trade.

not always sure...

In that situation the Leafs wouldn't need to trade assets though, they'd just wait till Monday.

The only advantage the Leafs gain from this is that if they have his rights they can negotiate a contract over 7 years; if they sign him as an UFA it would have to be a much shorter term.

So it looks like they'll offer him a much lower AAV over 7 years - if they pay him the going rate over a shorter term they couldn't fit him under the cap.

Likely he'll be under contract to age 41 or 42 then just place him on LTIR when his performance falls off a cliff; or do a Patrick Marleau-type trade where they give up draft picks to have another team swallow his contract.

His age and the reported length of the contract are imo big worries. I hope this is not because it’s the last kick of the can for both Shanahan and Treliving and to keep their jobs that they’re willing to set the franchise back for years just to get past the first playoff round,

It's the Maple Leafs. Since when should we be worried about them giving out bad contracts.

Marner's a poor playoff performer!! Also, Leafs have no intention of extending Marner's contract. Leafs might as well get rid of Marner sometime this yr, before Marner's contract expires, and the Leafs wind up getting nothing for him, in return!!

The Leafs plan to sign Marner to trade him, it's easier to trade a player with a contract. No team wants a player with an expiring contract. This avoids Marner walking to free agency without the Leafs getting something in return via trade. The Leafs aren't getting rid of Marner just because.

People want to get rid of Marner because he's not good, but they want the Leafs to trade him and get a ton of talent or prospects in return. Something conflicting about that logic.

Even if the Leafs lose the trade, getting Marner's contract off the books, would be a good thing!!

But then you have to replace 90 to 99 points a year(full year).
Yes, but then the Leafs will have $10.9 million in cap space to play with. The Leafs might be able to get two players to make up Marner's 90-99 pts a year??

Leafs Core four playoff stats :

Marner. 54 games. 49 pts. =. .91 per game

Matthews. 54. 47. =. .87

Nylander. 51. 40. =. .78

Tavares. 35 23. =. .66

If Marner is a poor playoff performer, what does that say about the other three ?

In contrast, McDavid has had 117 pts in 74 games for 1.58 per and

Draisaitl has had 108 pts in 74 for 1.46 per.

Hyman has had 49 pts in 53 as an Oiler for .92 per

No wonder the Oilers have been a lot more successful in the playoffs.

In the playoffs it's more than points per game, it's clutch scoring, how many game 7 winners or series-clinching goals have they had? One by John Tavares.

You have to have your core guys scorings to get to a game 7. Do you know how many game 7 winning goals has McDavid scored ? Correct me if I’m wrong, a quick search reveals the answer is “0” in 4 games. Does it mean McDavid is just as useless ? Using no game 7 scoring to attack a player is utmost absurdity imo.
