Plenty of fans also hated Nylander and probably still do waiting for their opportunity to pounce even when there is no justification for it like critisizing his playoff perfomances past and even present.

Plenty of fans also wanted Florida thinking it'll be a walk in the park.

Quite frankly I think the hate for Marner is overblown. Blaming Marner for the OT goal was utterly rediculous. That tells me all I need to know. The winger doesn't chase down low on a dump in. It's always the goalie to retrieve it if he can or the D. The winger stays high to cover the D and be in position if the goalie shoots it up the boards. Marner was in position to cover the direct pass to Pasta. He was in the right position. He wasn't there to shadow Pasta wherever he goes. Some were even critizing Nylander on that play. That was even more rediculous. That was for Sammy to do the poke check before Pasta could get to it or Rielly to make a better turn but we all know Rielly can't make good turns hence why he gives up the blue line easy and often.

Florida in 2022 won the Presidents Trophy and scored a whopping 340 goals. Tops in the league. They also had a +94 goal differential. Also tops. So they were already an exceptionally good high scoring team. What they did was build themselves up to be an exceptionally good defensive team without sacrificing much of the offense. Leafs were 3rd in goals with 315 and +62. Colorado who won the cup that year was 4th with 312 goals and +78.

In my estimation Tavares is more the problem than Marner. Taking salaries into consideration. Marner has played well in past playoffs. As Florida has shown they can stop Panarin who is very much like Marner size wise. Florida in 2 games has shown they can stop Draisatl and Hyman and to a certain extent even McD.

The Leafs will build up their D and goaltending under Treliving. That's a given. In the playoffs a team needs everything. Both offense and defense and that includes goaltending. The Leafs the last 3 games vs Boston changed their style of play. That's the way they need to play in the playoffs. They'll also need to get their PP working in the playoffs to be the difference maker.

Contractually, you are correct. But Marner is human, with emotions.

He is not very popular right now around here. The majority of fans want him gone. What if he blocks a trade that the fans feel would improve the team? There will be backlash. What is it going to feel like when he and the wife go out grocery shopping or a movie or restaurant and they hear some catcalls or rude comments. What's it going to feel like when he gets booed on the ice, something he's never experienced before. It's close to home, but it may no longer be a friendly place to play. He has emotions. He may beg to get out of town.
Exactly. What if he goes to a movie and has his SUV stolen.........oh wait, that happened already.

LOL.

TBH, he seems like a fine young man, but between him being called out on the bench by his teammates on the bench, his pussy ass hissy fit response to said calling out and him subsequently getting out hustled on the series winning goal (whatever mistakes others made on that goal does not absolve him of that poor effort at 11$M) has left a bad taste in the mouths of Leafs fans. This will not be a welcoming place for him to play or his wife to have a blissful home.

I think the Leafs should trade him in the offseason before the other teams hear of his uncomfortable life here. They will get a better return than if they see the Leafs being "forced" to trade him.

I'm not a capologist, so if the Leafs are forced to retain some of his salary, does that count against their cap?

I'd sat that there is a 17.82% chance he'll start next season in the Blue and White.

Look at the way Florida covers McD. It's not one guy chasing him around all over the ice wherever he goes.
Everyone is in position to hand off. Rielly was positioned smack in the middle of the defensive zone.
Guess where the puck went. In the middle of the defensive zone.

Certainly Marner deserves criticism but when there is hate for a player everything is his fault.
Shades of Larry Murphy. He's a fricken Hall of Famer.
If anything the fault lies with management and probably Shanahan.
They built a team after 8 years with no defense and goalies off the scrap heap.
The time to trade either Marner or Nylander to balance out the team was when they had leverage.

From thehockeywriters excerpt:

"Fans Should Not Expect Any of the Core Four to Be Moved
Trading one of the Core Four players would open up enough room to sign both Domi and Bertuzzi. Still, the buzz about the team dealing one of them has cooled off lately. Perhaps the spin from hockey writers and fans that John Tavares or Mitch Marner could be convinced to give up their no-move clauses to be traded has been tossed into the clickbait dumpster where it always belonged."

With teams like Oilers and Panthers around, What hope does the Leafs have for winning the Cup, Core 4 or not? Time to fire the GM.

What connection do these guys have to actual insiders like GMs or other people close to negotiations? Who are the sources for these amateurs? I'm sure that guys like Elliotte Friedman and many others on national TV have actual connections.

They are not insiders. They have no connections. They are 2 youtubers looking to make money and that's it. They also clearly use clickbait to get views. So you know whatever they say is not worth your time. There are other youtubers just like them.

I bring up the point of irony since mitchell (no relation to Marner) proudly brought up their youtube link since he likes anything relating to Mitchy being traded but the big announcement they have is that he's likely to extend with Leafs.

The scapegoat syndrome exists everywhere in team sports. Disgruntled fans, with the push of attention seeking media, feel the need to scapegoat as a valve to vent their frustration on the team failures and their emotIonal Investments. In these fans’ minds they want to pick one individual player to drive out of town so to justify their self acclaimed superior knowledge in finding answers to the team improvement.

Unfortunately in Leafs’ history, scapegoating has never helped the team. Driving Murphy and Kadri out of town only helped these players to win the cups somewhere else. It looks as though Marner is going to be next.

IMHO, to sign Marner to an 8 yr extension, would be ridiculous!!
I don’t for one second believe that. It’s more like whoever suggested that was merely playing tricks on the minds of the Marner haters like they’re little kids.

Assuming Leafs management wanting to get rid of Marner just as bad as you and shack do, I’d think they need to be very carful in how they get about doing it for two reasons:

1) making life miserable for Marner to force him to waive his no trade is not an act of good faith; it would give the Leafs a bad reputation and make it an undesirable destination for future ufa’s. It would also create a chaotic lock room environment. The first mistake was made when they put this core together and the second mistake was they missed the chance to trade Marner last year before his no trade kicked in; and

2) they’ll get fleeced just as badly as they did with the Murphy and Kadri trades in any trade scenarios as Marner’s trade value is probably at the lowest now. With his most recent poor playoff performance why would any contending team give up significant value to get him ? For rebuilding teams they can wait till he’s a ufa if they do want him. Marner is still a point per game player and they’ll not get anything close in return.

The Leafs’ playoff failures run deeper than just Marner under performing. From goaltending to defence to specialty teams to coaching to core player performance, they were inferior to their opponents. Merely getting rid of Marner does not solve all problems and could be a case of jumping out of a frying pan into the fire.

So worst case scenario. Let Marner play out this coming season, due to Marner's no move clause. Then get rid of Marner next season for nothing, and open up cap space. Marner's a "playoff disaster", and the Leafs need to get rid of him!!
If you take a look at the list of potential unrestricted free agents coming up in 2025, you’ll see a huge list of impactful players, probably the most extensive list in the history of ufas. The Leafs will be wise to position themselves with as much cap room as possible so they can go after whoever they think can make them better. Other teams are also thinking the same way and that’s why I don’t think any team would give up much to get Marner now.

Marner had had good playoff performances and with a new coaching staff, it may be worth the while to see what transpires. Again they need improvements in a lot of areas and most significantly they need a heathy Woll as their no. 1 goaltender as I don’t think they can acquire anyone better through acquisitions.

So many errors in there. I'll address just one.

If the fans at the rink, or about town, give Marner a hard time, how is that a bad reflection on the Leafs as an organization? And don't dismiss the fact that, as was demonstrated on the bench during a game, Marner clearly has lost at least some respect of his teammates, including Matthews. And that was before that overtime goal.

That’s Some kind of arrogance that any opinions you don’t agree with are “ errors “.

Keep repeating your opinions and assumptions doesn’t make them facts. You have no clues as to exactly what were said and no proof to back up your assumptions that “Marner clearly lost some respect ofhis teammates including Matthews”;

and where in my post did I refer to fan booing ? Read my post again and you’ll understand that my “making life miserable “ comments were confined to possible Leaf management actions if they wanted to force Marner to waive his no trade protection.

Elliotte Friedman reporting that he's heard Domi's camp is asking for a 4 year deal at $4 million per year.
