All the 4 major team sports leagues have 30 or more teams. I see no need to cut back to 28. But I sure as heck would move the Coyotes to a better locale.
What would be your first choice of city for relocation?

Tavares throughout his career has been roughly a point a game player. Nothing more nothing less. He has been very consistent. Even last year he had 80 pts in 80 games. This season he has a slight dip but he hasn't fully fallen off the cliff. Analytics has him playing fine. Expected goals if you will. His shooting percentage is currently the lowest it has ever been in his whole career. Still a volume shooter though. 18th in the league. Considering it's the tail end of his contract this is I suppose expected. He still is the 4th best forward on the Leafs.

Speaking of volume shooters Matthews is 4th, Nylander is 6th. Hyman is 15th ahead of all Oilers including McC who is 25th

And the the Toronto Maple Leafs would never allow two of them.

I know you are not personally doing it here, but its amazing how many people feel the lack of teams in those markets is a Bettman issue.
Exactly. People were lamenting that the odds are stacked against a Canadian team and how the new expansion teams have it so much easier than once upon a time.

So I figured getting in a whack of Canadian teams all at once would solve the problem. Whether they were viable options or not was immaterial.

Kansas City or Houston seem to be the big talk whenever expansion comes up But I'm still scratching my head wondering why neither put an offer in for the Atlanta Thrashers

The belief was that Tavares was a point a game player on a team with very little scoring talent and being surrounded with all of the young talent on the Leafs his numbers would hit the 100 point plateau every year but it hasn't.

Atlanta is getting a lot of consideration for their third kick at the can.

I think Utah would be a better choice than all three despite that it's a small market the competition with other sports is the Jazz only and they have the arena.

Can you imagine? The next expansion draft teams cannot protect more than 2 players that earn more than $11M. Marner or Nylander gone to Atlanta.

Tavares scored 47 goals in his first season with the Leafs playing with Marner and Hyman. That line was also very good in the playoffs vs Boston matched up against Bergeron/Pasta/Marchand. That season Marner had 68 assists and 94 pts which probably helped him get his big contract. Tavares previous best goal total was 38 with NYI.

Matthews, Nylander, and Tavares are all volume shooters. Marner could play with either Matthews or Tavares.
Tavares and Nylander never seemed to be a good fit. Domi is also a passer and not a shooter so would make logical sense to play with Nylander. Plus he has speed. Having a volume shooter one on each line sounds like a good idea. Tavares in his time with NYI was always known to carry his no name wingers. Perhaps that's what he is better suited for. Plus it makes for a stronger 3rd line. Something they have always tried to accomplish.

The Leafs just lost to the Philly Flyers 4:3 tonite. WTF, the Keafs have playoff/cup embition? They need better performance than this for all the $ten of millions we are paying their players.
They need Marner back.

TB is starting to ramp it up. Winners of their last 4 games and most recent against Vegas.
This puts Toronto back in the wild card race with a potential to cross over and play NYR and Rempe.
He has the potential to knock out 1 player per game with a head shot.

The Leafs played really well tonite beating the Washington Capitals 7:3. This is the kind of performance I like to see from a team getting paid so much. Matthews is 1 goal away from 70. Well dome Leafs. Go Leafs Go.

Ah crap the Leafs go and beat Washington moving them away from getting elbowed by Rempe in round 1. Leafs are 7pts up on Tampa.

I don't know if I'd say they played really well. More like they played well enough to beat a clearly inferior team.
The good signs for me are the play of Bertuzzi and Tavares.
The poor signs are the play of Morgan Rielly defensively and the 4th line crappiness. Kampf and Gregor are nothing more than pylons.

Domi and Bert starting to fit in nicely with the Leafs. Too bad they won't be back next season.

I'm hoping they don't bring Domi back. This organization doesn't need a repeat of the bullshit shenanigans his old man was pulling during his playing days.

Every team has the same amount of money to spend. There's a salary cap so Washington actually had the advantage since Marner's 10.9 million was not available.

Here's hoping Washington doesn't make the playoffs. Otherwise it'll be a walk in the park for either Florida or Boston. Washington's game is geared towards getting Ovi goals. It's probably better for Ovi to miss the playoffs. Save himself for the regular season since his focus is on breaking the record.

Domi is a passer so it makes some sense to play him with Matthews but this is Washington after all and their goalie was terrible. Defense also. Hence regular season is not playoffs. Leafs will be facing Vezina quality goalies in Boston and Florida as well as tough defensive structure. NYR has a Vezina quality goalie as well.

Benoit makes one of those neutral zone turnovers per game that results in goals. That's his weakness.
I think Woll will eventually get his game back and be the starter for the playoffs.
Brodie needs to get his game back also.
