I know some ladies are fine with verification through a board handle but you actually have to contact them through the board, otherwise you are correct in that someone could simply claim to be another poster and it would not be verifiable.
In providing a reference it's generally fine to contact the lady you are looking to book using the email you booked the last companion through, provide a bit of simple information such as the name you saw your reference under, the city you met (very important if she tours) and an approx. day/time (even if you just say 1-2months ago for a 7am appt that will help). If you are on a verification board then providing that information is helpful as well as I mentioned above as it can speed up the process but it's not needed as *most* ladies will still insist on a reference unless you are well-known and established.
As mentioned above a phone number may also be required but this will really depend on if you reached out to your reference via phone or not, just provide something the lady can verify. If a lady books only through phone then she'll need that info, if it's through email then that'd be what you need to provide.
If your information has recently changed, say you are now hotstuff6969@youremailprovider.com where you used to be youngnaivething@youremailprovider.com you may need to reach out to your reference via your new email to confirm your identity, letting her know some of the details that perhaps only you would know from the date, but that is an easy way to keep references even after changing or losing access to old contact information.

Those guys probably still see it that way. Which is fine. But that is how they see it for themselves but when they extrapolate it to others, including me, they may as well tell me how to tie my shoelaces.

I'm surprised that more than a few men would participate in that. Asking for references is one thing - submitting a bunch of personal information that can come back to bite us later is just asking for trouble.
I've been in this business since the start of the internet. During that time I have provided references exactly zero times. In all those years, only one Canadian provider pushed for references and denied me. She was very upset that I wouldn't give her my TERB handle while I really wasn't bothered that she held firm.
To be honest, I rarely see someone more than maybe twice so how could I possibly provide references. If faced with a reference demand I will simply spend my money elsewhere.
