1: I had this conversation with a timmies chicky who I was sort of friendly with and we were talking about tipping in general and she said I bring you your food so you need to tip. No you don't I bring the food to the table, or home and throw out my own garbage. The entitlement of some people. Not that "bringing your food" really means shit. In some parts of Canada there is only one minimum wage.
2: I see people tipping quite a bit at the local chip stand, they have some out door picnic tables and usually people bring their shit home. You go to the counter, pick up your food. Now it's considered a tipping thing. Fuck that.
3: I also see tipping jars at places they should not be.
4: If someone ever pre selected the tip, I'd set it to 0. If I got any attitude, I'd go full Ken on his manager. I'd bring out my inner black chick, much like Gwen Stafani I ain't no Harlem black girl but I can play the role.
5: There was a notice at the local St Hubert I saw, it was out of the way for staff but I see words I read word reminding their minions that tipping is optional and they shouldn't be asking people for it, I'd guess if you complained to the manager he would go ape shit. Some American places are just as entitled as their employees expecting people to pay their wage bill because minimum wage is so low, but I don't think that is anywhere near as bad as here. ALso I'm 6'2, I can get away with shit without it getting physical [not that it should].

Hahahahaha. The LCBO shite kills me. I get asked for change from the homeless guy in the parking lot, then hit for cash from a few kids outside the door raising money for their hockey league, then inside hit for a donation at the cash for the ever changing organizations.
Cashiers at LCBO are instructed to ask for those donations by management. Also, LCBO has increased their prices on almost all of their products by 10%. Employees have not had a raise in a number of years.

I have been to a number of European countries and the majority of pubs and restaurants do not ask for or expect tips, Ireland, England, Spain, Portugal, Denmark where my adult son lives who told me that in Copenhagen wait staff generally earns the equivalent of at least $20. per hr. CAD. When I go to a pub here, usually once a week, I pay my bill with a credit card and give a cash tip at approximately 15%. When I play golf I will tip the golf cart girl but when I order a beer in the clubhouse and pick it up myself at the counter, no tip.

In Japan too. In Japan I tipped at a restaurant once, out of habit and the guy ran behind me to give me my change back because he thought I overpaid. :ROFLMAO: I asked him to keep it but he politely refused. I later learned that it can actually be considered rude in Japan to tip! He must have gone back and dissed at this ignorant gaijin! :ROFLMAO:

I completely agree with everything you said. In retrospect, maybe cancelling it and re-doing it was the way to go. I was kind of caught off guard and did not want to be confrontational at that moment.

The tip he chose was 30%.
Jesus. Where was this? Generally the nicer places are… nicer.

No kidding. Grocery stores solicit for donations too. I say no to them all. I do not give away money without knowing how it is being used. Too many charities are inefficient or borderline fraudulent.

Not to mention have the liquor cost is already taxes. You forgot the panhandler outside the LCBO too. He/she wants a cut. You can't go anywhere anymore without 1 or more people wanting to get into your wallet.
Fun hack. In self check out, put one or two items in your bag without scanning them. Then add the $2 or whatever for the charity.

Everybody wins.

When you tip a server your tipping on tax not the actual cost of the product or service.
BINGO!!!

Fuck that shit. You're basically giving them a tip for properly calculating the tax. Ludicrous.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? How did or would you handle this situation?
At minimum, I'd change it myself. If I want to put the server on the spot, I'd ask him why he did that and make him change it to custom amount.

I always choose "custom", deduct the tax and decide how much I feel like tipping based on that pre-tax amount. Based on the service, it might be more than 15% and it might be less. But fair is fair.

I believe that most people just accept the amount they're shown either out of sheer laziness or mathematical ignorance.

I agree. At the very least they will do something about training their employees to behave better.
I'm not 100% sure of that. If the servers are making extra tips, it takes pressure off the owner to pay them a fair wage.

Regarding, donations at retailers. The fact is that when a retailer makes a donation to a charity from what donations it’s customers left, the retailer gets tax credit for it, hence I stopped giving retailers donations many moons ago.
Yep, that Galen Weston guy from Loblaws loves the annual pic with the huge cheque donation to charity "from Loblaws" pic for media purposes too

My 2 cents worth
When you tip a server your tipping on tax not the actual cost of the product or service. I only ever tip 12 to 15% I'm not cheap I was a server once too.
I never tip on take out at a coffee shop or fast food place. I refuse to be bullied or shamed into tipping for handing something over a counter
Just as a counter point. One of my favourite thai restos has a "friends and family" discount. I always tip about 10 percent on takeout. Well, they put me in "friends and family" and for that I get a very nice discount with every order there. I've never calculated it, but it's more than 10 percent.

Now I know this is a one of, but, I figure that restaurant is giving me a friends and family discount, I will leave the staff a few bucks.

But yes, everyone expecting a tip now is out of control. Even the food courts in the mall all have tipping options. The solution I use is to pay cash.

Now BMO has a jar at each teller position asking for donation to a charity!

LOL! I don't need the aggravation of being accused of a petty crime. The grocery chain can dig into their billions and make a charitable donation on behalf of their customers. Not my problem to solve. I already pay my share and then some.

Sure, you can say 'hack'. Others will say 'theft'. I guess it depends on what the police would say if they caught you and reviewed the cameras...

That said, I totally agree that the self check out garbage needs to stop. I'm not being paid to do their job but it's now almost a necessity to use, unless you like standing in a line up for 20 minutes to use the one check out lane that is actually being manned by a real person.

I was looking at wine bottles a few months ago at LCBO trying to decide what I want. This lady asks "Can I help you with anything?", and I go "Thank you, but am set for now".

And she goes "Oh a customer who knows what he wants!!" in a semi-mocking way. Like WTF. :ROFLMAO:
That's when you should of asked her if she could find a few bottles of something you know they don't stock. Have her looking for shit while you continue on with your shopping.

When they ask for a donation I say, "No I am a horrible monster". Not like I know them and don't have any fornication to give as to what they think of me. Its also often good for a laugh.

What, it joins great lyrics like Hendricks singing "excuse me while I kiss this guy" or that Bob Dylan singing how the ants are his friends, they are blowing in the wind. The Eurythmics singing about how “Sweet dreams are made of cheese”, the Beatles singing "I want to hold your ham" I donno about you, but I like ham. Elton John’s singing “Hold me closer, Tony Danza”. Poor girl, being called a Harlem black girl, that is bananas, b a n a n a s.

Sad that you can't recognize the overt racism in your post.
