At no point should the staff be doing that unless instructed too. Call the restaurant and speak to the manager. Tell him what happened and that you will never return because of the experience.

I like to pay cash so I don't have to deal with the machines. I carry small bills and some coins so I leave exactly what I want to. I never tip on tax. I Tell the server to come back in a few minutes.
Funny, I sometimes do the same. When I'm picking up food from a fast food joint in particular, I usually just select the "no tip" option on the machine, but sometimes I worry about nefarious actions of staff if I ever choose to go back there again. At least by paying cash it doesn't look like you wilfully avoided tipping. So less hassle to pay with cash, as counterproductive as that seems.

It's a sad world when people feel so righteous that they'll spit in your food if you don't tip them. But these do tend to be minimum wage jobs where the attracted talent is sometimes...questionable.

Somewhere between here and there
I completely agree with everything you said. In retrospect, maybe cancelling it and re-doing it was the way to go. I was kind of caught off guard and did not want to be confrontational at that moment.

The tip he chose was 30%.
Wow - that is rude! I would have cancelled. If service is good I do 20% but on avg - 15-18%

That's a good point. So should we limit tipping to those working below or at the minimum wage threshold?
Tipping is based on slave labor - it started with the black railroad porter. The tipping nonsense is basically an American sickness. It is an insult in much of Asia and in Germany and parts of Europe, you just round up to the nearest dollar to avoid change. I treat sexworkers as professionals, who are making good money and do not need to be tipped for their slave labor like many believe minimum wage workers are who rely on tips for food and basic housing. No sexworker making $200-$500/hr needs tips to afford a decent living. Tipping is for those that need charity, not professional workers.

im a senior so my barber has a senior discount ..i pay $20 instead of $22....its a small place..him and an old guy...i dont care who cuts my hair...i pay 25$..wish them a good day and go about my business.....no analyzing , no after thought about tipping....no obsessing....im fortunate enough to have led a relatively stress free life...and this is a tiny part why..
As a senior senior, I get my haircut by a mid 40s Chinese lady in Leaside and her rate is $28. Although I am half bald, grow more hair in my ears, nose and have thick bushy eyebrows and a mustache, she takes her time trimming all my unwanted hair, even through COVID, then gives me a head and shoulder massage (no lower body massage, damn), I usually give her $6. tip and she really appreciates it and the haircut lasts about three months. To me, it is all about the attitude of service staff. If they do and good job, they deserve a decent tip.

I also tip my $20 barber $5 (from a large franchise "Great Clips" whoever I get when make an online appointment available so in many minutes.) But she is not a high-priced professional sexworker, although sometimes when lucky I wish she was :)

I'm schocked! I thought this was about tipping in the context of hobbying....

The wife and I took the kids to a resort near Fort Erie last year. The only thing to eat on site is a Boston Pizza. It's at the pool. She ordered some eats while the kids swam and rode the water slides. SHE WAS FORCED TO PAY 18% TIP! It's baked into the prices! WTF?!?!

Dude,

I know people think that's what happens, but it doesn't. Don't worry about tipping on take out. They're not expecting a tip. Having that said, one time I did go to Denny's for take out and was paying cash. Girl punches in my order. comes to 16 bucks so I give her a $20 and she goes "did you want any change back?" I look at her cockeyed and say "of course"...lol.

So this is why I just came back to this thread. Went to Milestones yesterday and had a burger on my lunch break from work. Get the bill, sever brings over the machine, go through the buttons and then it gets to the part where it ask if I want to leave a tip. I select yes and it gives me 3 options. The lowest being 18%. I'm thinking, what happened to 15%?? I mean with the price of food gone up so high they're getting tipped on a higher bill. Anyway, there's an option to select "other" amount which I did and punched in 15% on principle. I'm as easy as they come. Had a burger and fries and she didn't have to come back to my table once until I needed the bill. Sorry, but I'm not giving someone more then 5 bucks because she walked from the kitchen to my table with a single plate of food.

I work as a Cook in a restaurant (think more glorified fast food place) and despite being paid $15 an hour I'm still unable to afford a single meal per an hour of work despite making dozens of those orders an hour all ranging from $15 to much higher. Understandably there are a lot of costs such as paying all working employees $15/h and the costs of running electricity, water, gas etc but still expenses should be lowered so price of food can be lowered and then just maybe....just maybe tipping culture can make sense. But otherwise, I'm not making minimum wage to waste all my money tipping other minimum wage people.

And you guys get the total raw end of the stick as being a cook can be very difficult and often work harder then the servers.

I was a server/bartender for years back in the day when there was a server wage that was less than minimum wage. Depending on location of the place you worked at, I knew some people that tips didn’t make up the difference. Back then we provided quality service and looked after our customers. These servers today are lazy compared to what we used to do and they expect customers to give 20% tip, on top of the taxes. Any place that mandates the customer tip (usually at 20%) I won’t visit again. Tips were a sign of service, now they are treated like they are deserved regardless of service.

Don’t even get me started on fast food places asking for tips

Fuck, the LCBO is another place that pisses me off to. They ask for a donation to some organization. If I am feeling particular good that day, I would give the buck or two they ask for. T

I usually donate as it's usually for a good cause. Went in there last month and girl says "Would you like to make a donation to PRIDE?" WTF???

Being gay is now a charity??? Probably the first time I've ever turned down a donation request there.

So here is something a little refreshing on this topic. The wife and I went out for lunch yesterday to a nice restaurant in midtown for the summerlicious menu. Service was good, food was good, waiter was pretty cool and funny, suggested a very good cocktail to get started. Overall, it was a good experience.

Then, the 'machine' came when time to pay. To my amazement, the 3 pre-determined tip options were 10, 12 and 15%. You no longer see those numbers so hats off to that restaurant for not going all tip-crazy with upwards of 30% pre-determined tip amounts.
