I Have no idea what delivery guys you get but I have NEVER had one argue a tip at the door. Not once. I usually throw under 10% and they are all nice.

Mind you we now order maybe once a week and alternate between 2 Chinese places, Gino's, Sushi about once a month. A few other places mixed in.

I saw this topic on the news, last night. A lady owner said she runs a no tip model and pays her workers a living wage. She said $25 per hour, so kudos to her. It looked to be a small restaurant in TO.
But OT, how much yearly profit do these small places make? The small franchises I visit, like Mary Browns have a different family running it almost yearly. It looks like the whole family works to make it a go.

I went to a pizza place called Beast Pizza last year - no tipping policy as a I recall...the server was miserable and made an ok effort but clearly wasn't motivated. She was overall ok I suppose. Then again half of the servers who expect a tip don't put any additional effort into the service - they just take your order, bring food and drink, stop by once to see if you're ok and then bring the bill (that's when they get extra friendly)

I was at Denny's the other day, and I shit you not, a robot brought my food to the table. The server took my order, but a robot brought the food. At the end I was like "so if a robot did most of the work....".

Anyway, might have to start a separate thread about how shit is getting blade runner type real. I couldn't fucking believe it when this things showed up at my table. It even repeated my order to the exact specs I asked for.

Went to RedStone Winery recently, was told no tipping, workers paid a living wage, ok, fair enough.

The prices were fucking ridiculous, WAYYYYYY cheaper to tip and to top it off the server explained that while no tipping was expected I COULD tip with a separate machine if I like the service.

WTF, never go back to these pirates again

I wonder if that holds true of Europe or only North America? In other words, is that much of a price hike necessary or are they scamming us?
I like the robot idea or pay workers enough so we can get rid of the silly racist tipping idiotsy. It started in the US as a way to tip black almost slave workers as porters and servers on passenger railroads.

Robots are catching on in Asia, from reports. This solves the lack of workers, and they do not take vacations or get upset or moody. I would willingly pay a bit more to not have the silly tipping. When I was in Germany you just rounded up to the next Dollar/Euro so don't need to get small change. That makes a great deal of sense to me.

I love the new ordering system at many of McDonald's at least in the US. They eliminate the order taker they have a very easy to use big display where you can take your time deciding what to order, you get a numbered big sign thing you put at your table and someone delivers the food. Obviously no tipping. Maybe they will take it to the next step to have a robot deliver the food, that would be just fine with me.

At the Toronto airport, I noted a few years ago a big eating area near the end of one of the terminals where you order by a device at the table which also has a phone charger etc. I normally do not eat anything at airports, unless a long layover or delay between flights.

I have never tipped a sexworker since they are not minimum wage slave laborers and have never had a problem Sexworkers tips should be repeat customers and good honest reviews for a job well none, not this silly tipping thing.

Good service means 15% pretax tip.

I used to work as a delivery guy for a florist. If the family orders $3000 worth of flowers for a funeral, should I get a LARGE tip for delivery?
no. next item

In places like Europe, it seems that tipping is not expected but appreciated. I know someone who tried to tip in a restaurant in Italy and the money was returned to him. On the other hand, I always tipped in Europe and no one said I shouldn't. The tips are not as crazy as here, perhaps 5 to 10%. I would feel shitty if I didn't tip.

Another issue I seen are places like resorts and cruises who advertise no tipping. At one big chain resort, they always maintained no tipping policy until check out time and they provide you with an envelope to tip your favourite employee at the resort. Same as cruise ships. Again, no tipping is advertised and then you find the envelope in your room on your last day.

But how much more expensive are the meals in those countries? Since they pay a living wage to their servers, do they hike up the prices on the menu significantly? I'm trying to figure out if it's cheaper to tip or if we should go the way of Europe.
I spend 3-4 months in Europe every year. I think cost of eating out is about the same as here (unless in London which is more expensive) and from what I know the server wages are similar to here. i.e. minimal wage (Except for in France where they're paid more and it's considered an actual profession and not a low end job - that's what my friend tells me and she spends 3 months in France every winter). I think in these countries they just accept that for a low skilled job like a server, where you need very little intelligence, training and skill that the wages will be poor and that's just life. It's also considered a job for students and not for a career. No one owes anyone a decent or living wage

Prices in some EU restaurants may be somewhat more expensive but you can easily find cheaper places by comparing different eateries. However most restaurants and pubs do pay higher wages for servers pretty well everywhere.

It depends where you go. In Italy, for example, if you go to the more touristy areas then you will be paying more. Avoiding these areas and eating where the locals go will not only save you money but the food and service is much better. They treat you like your eating at a close friends or relatives home. And they don't expect the tip but I give it to them anyway.
In comparison to here, about the same in the tourist areas as a descent downtown restaurant.

In large cities in Italy and other EU cities, many restaurants have various prices depending on where you sit, in the fine lounge area it is more expensive especially for booze than sitting outside in the patio.

I actually have another scenario that I am curious how others would handle it. When I get a haircut, the establishment I go to is owned by a couple. They have an employee who helps out, washes hair, etc. The employee washes my hair before and after my cut and I tip her for it. The male owner of the salon cuts my hair and I also tipped him in the past. In a casual conversation with friends, where this whole tipping thing was discussed, it was mentioned that you should never tip if the owner is the one doing your hair, only if its an employee, as in the girl that washes my hair. Does that also extend to hairdressers that 'rent' chairs in salons since they could be considered independent contractors and set their own prices? Should they be tipped or not?

Owner cuts my hair and I tip her. She does a great job, accommodates my schedule for appointments often fitting me in at short notice, sometimes opening up the shop early. Don’t think there is a no tip for owner rule out there.

im a senior so my barber has a senior discount ..i pay $20 instead of $22....its a small place..him and an old guy...i dont care who cuts my hair...i pay 25$..wish them a good day and go about my business.....no analyzing , no after thought about tipping....no obsessing....im fortunate enough to have led a relatively stress free life...and this is a tiny part why..
