It could be that in his zeal to establish his own identity, Paul Maurice has burned the team out. He's an intense coach and his pratices are brutal, opponents are running over the Leafs in the 3rd period because our lads have nothing left in the tank.

Just my 2 cents.

I question the same thing. I also question why JFJr has kept Paul Maurice. he's flat out failed.

Pavel Kubina .. is he worth 5 million ...?
only as a maple leaf!

Wonder which Maple Leafs team is to show up tonight??? The one who tormented the Sabres 4-1 and destroyed the Capitals 7-1 or the team who lost seven in a roll??? There is no doubt Maurice is on thin ice as we speak. It is a coach job to turn the team around and winning games is the bottom line. Losing any more games may very well get him fired.

In the laboratory.
I watch very little hockey but tonight sounds like it might be comical. Two stumbling teams flailing away at one another, perhaps with the winner making the next-to-last horrible mistake.:p

Nothing brings a team out of funk like a game against Toronto.

Well, Maurice gave them a lung full in the second period and I guess it worked because they came back with 4 unanswered goals.

Was it just me or did tonight's game feel almost like a playoff game where you're hanging on to every shot as if it was a deathnell?

playoff game? yes and no.

you're right that about 'hanging on to every shot as if it was a ...'

but, the level of play by both teams was crappy. high t/o's, poor goaltending, undisciplined play and too much bad passing by both teams. (except Lecalvalier, St. Louis, and Richards looked good)

Over-working the team is just as bad as not working the team at all. If so, Maurice's intensity is misplaced, causing the undesirable results to the Leafs.

How soon the end of December comes, and with it 1/2 of the season played for the Leafs.

what's worst is that most of the ever important inter-divisional play games have been played and the record isn't telling a good story.

however, good fortune could come shall the leafs finish the year 2006 with no less than 14pts. of the next 8 games.

I have avoided posting in this thread because of the sheer pain when watching my beloved Maple Leafs play. The early season success was in turn a precursor to our eventual decay. Injuries are always an issue, but never an excuse. Scoring wasn't a problem, but is now an obvious flaw. Goaltending seemed to have been taken care of with 3 decent goalminders, but has now broken down to an embarassment. Defence is spotty, and money spent has not yet showed its worth. Pain I tell you, pain!!

Half the season left, miracles are always possible. Need I say it again....I still beleaf.

Perfectly said !!!!! Roberto Luongo is where JFK should have tried to solve his problems with .. IF your going to give up one of the best goalie prospects
why not offer him to Florida .. Throw in Tucker and a young defenseman and
problem solved ...
yeah, problem solved except-

1. that's not anything close to what Florida wanted, so the deal would be dead.
2. how we'd fit that under the cap with Sundin, Kaberle and McCabe still on the roster? i have no idea. but, like i said, the deal woulda been dead because of #1 above.

Oh now you know what the Florida wanted ... Look what they accepted ..
A player who is a free agent at the end of this year and a career back up goalie ...
cap room. well not necessarily, but, they gotta keep payroll low.

in case you didn't know, Florida is the most financially strapped team in the NHL.

Wow.

Leafs blow a 2 goal lead ONCE AGAIN in the third. But miraculously they scored one more and beat the SC Champs 4-3. It was rather ironic that Steen scored the winner. The 'Canes had tied it up shortly after Steen hit one flush off the post minutes earlier. He also had a couple of good chances right before the actual goal. As well he hadn't scored in 27 games.

2 wins in a row. Plan the parade.

Cap room !!!! Holly shit .. I give up .... Sorry I must have mistaken you for somebody with hockey knowlege ... Cap room ... They were bidding for
Ed Jovanovski they paid GARY ROBERTS 2 million and his buddy Joe for
2 Million and Olli Jokinen 4 years 21 million ...
check out the rest of the roster. pretty small budget. actually the league's 2nd smallest payroll. Pittsburgh is the #1 lowest payroll with only 1 player making above $2.28 million against the cap. (Gonchar)

every season, December is when you'll see the league really heat things up.

this is the time when players and teams start to break into their own and show a glimpse of what the rest of the season has in store.

although this was a great effort by the leafs tonight, the 'canes have been playing their worst hockey of the season currently.

Ok watched the game last night and sunbeam seems to be picking up the pace but wtf was with that call in the first period? I mean, a Cane was down in front of their goalie, they have the puck in the toronto end and the dickhead ref doesn't blow the whistle until there's a toronto 2 on nothing?

jesus.....I really think they are getting out of hand with these minor penalties (for both teams). They brought the new rules out to speed up the game but all they are doing now is slowing it down by calling every minor infraction...this is getting out of hand folks

Anyhow, leafs have to stay out of the penalty box. Freaking stupid 3rd period penalties is gonna bury them.

u gotta call the clutching and grabbing. it is killing the offensive excitement of the game.

average goals per game right now is around 6. when Wayne Gretzky played in his first two seasons the average goals per game was above 7!

of noteworthy comment:
after Wayne Gretzky's first 109 games played as a pro (WHA & NHL combined), he had scored a whopping 137 points.
Sydney Crosby's play at the same age and after his 1st 109 games as a pro is the only player to score more at a younger age with his 153 pts.

goals have come easier in the early '80s as compared to now, and yet, Crosby is still finding a way to perform at such a young age in this game.
