I don't think finishing second in the divsion means anything does it .. ..
you are 100% correct. #2 could miss the playoffs entirely!

although, as you stated, because the Northeast is a tough division, 2 teams should be able to make good standing performance over the inner conference play come April. 2 of the strongest divisions in the East might even have 3 teams make the post season. just as last season.

just like last season... right now, i'd say the Northeast and the Southeast are the 2 strongest divisions... one of these 2 divisions will have atleast 3 teams make post season.

The 'Canes (and Oilers) had better goaltending than the Leafs have. Raycroft will prove to be their undoing. Heck they're 13 and 13 right now, regardless of how many "points" they have. Trust the idiots that run the NHL to reward failure with a point. What do they think they are? The Children's Football League?

guess who dressed up for the Marlies last night?

Carlo the 'ironman'. he registered an assist on Foster's goal, was a +2, did alot of end to end rushes and had 2 shots on net.

sounds like he needs to be immediately put up on the leafs' roster...

If the Leafs are gonna have a slide..

...it would be better to have it now...rather than in late Jan/ early Feb...

They seem top be gripping with the scoring chances...shooting when they should be passing, and passing when they should be shooting. And regardless of the shot totals over the last couple of games, the true quailty scoring chances have been minimal..they've made Tim Thomas and Kari Lehtonen look like Hall of Famers...when a slump like this starts, the only way outnis to play with some desparation and intensity..neither of which I've seen yet, but with the natural rivalry of Montreal, I'd expect to see it on Saturday...

I don't like Paul Maurice when he says 'i liked what i saw' everytime the leafs lose...

they should be improving, not regressing.

true you are. PM has handled the media much better than expected. he used to be such a 'brash' cocky guy when i remembered him in his OHL coaching days...

i'm happy in that it is what's best for the team... no doubt, that should be #1...

i'm frustrated though, that i don't know what he's really thinking. (well i can only guess)

Like Quinn, PM is loyal to his players and i wouldn't expect major changes or trades to occur with this team. on the other hand, i think some major changes could be done.

it takes brass balls to do something like put a John LeClair on waivers, as what the Pens did. needed to be done, but a tough decision nonetheless... this should have been done with Domi during the season last year. I'm thinking right now, that we still need more offense on this team and more power up front. Lindros would've worked well on this season's roster.

nope. not 2nite either... but, it was an excellent game.

BTW-
They reported on CBC late night (Colorado/Vancouver) that Karlis Scrastins is available from the Avalanche... he would be a great addition as a top 4 defensive d-man. he's the current 'iron-man' (100's of games played consecutively) of the NHL and Colorado's top shot blocker... one of the top 10 in the league in shots blocked.

Drew Remenda said that SJ's Doug Wilson is attempting at making a deal that would have him land with the Sharks. Could JFJr pursue this avenue before anything happens? Should he? Cap space does provide room, but it's tight.

Also heard that JFJr may be pursuing Bondra to get Sundin a descent winger... wasn't that what Jeff O'Neill was? Some also say we should leave Bondra alone... arguing that he's gonna be too expensive- that's why he currently isn't signed. A better winger that may currently be available for Sundin would be ??? I guess that's the mystery 2milliondollar question.

one sad thing for the leafs is that they have no games in hand on any other team. it looks like the leafs will be sitting in 9th spot come Sunday, Dec. 10th even if they stay above .500 against the Bruins, Thrashers, and Red Wings this week whether they like it or not.

I am just saying if overall payroll goes up ( Salary Cap ) and its all goes to
top end players then the league will be full of teams with only one good line and the rest of medicore talent .. The quality of hockey suffers ... It will
result in total Mediocrity with all teams ...
The NHL has been like that for many years and it had nothing to do with salaries or salary cap. Not many teams can boast having more than one top quality line. There are far too many teams and thus the talent pool has been spread way too thin.

Really how about the Red Wing teams before the Cap .. How about Colorado Forsberg, Sackic , Tanguay , etc ., Hey if you Cap the salaries at 7 or even
6 million then teams can have more talent which will help with the product
on the ice ...

I said MANY teams cannot boast having a top quality second line. Not ALL teams. Go team by team and give me a real TOP second line and you will have way more on the 'Not-So-Top' side.

Where will all this talent come from that you refer to? If you spread all the players around from the league now you are still spreading many mediocre players around. MOST teams have 1-2 real stars, but not much more than that. Look at your Leafs - how many stars would you say they have? Never mind a good second line, they don't even have a good first line. Sundin-Antropov-Pokahonsky aren't the second coming of the Kid Line. I am a long time Bruins fan and I don't see one player who excites me. Same for many many other teams. Too many teams = too much garbage. Get rid of about 10-12 teams.

Well lets take Ottawa for example ... They could have resigned some of their players ... They had to give up their top defenseman and a good scorer .. So what does that result ... Boston is medicore , Chicago is still bad and you now have a weaker Senators team ie talent wise .. Why is this hard to understand ... Salary cap set at let say 44 million ... Salary cap for players
capped at 6 million ... Wouldn't that result in a team having more salary to spend on more players ...
No - what is it that YOU cannot understand. Go ahead and tell me how many teams have more than 1-2 REAL star players out of the 30 teams. If you give me more than 5 then you better have another look because you are reaching. Some have NONE IMO. Yes there are a few teams with more star players but you are still have a lot of teams that have a bunch of garbage who wouldn't make the old AHL. You can go on about salary cap all you want but if you want better quality, get rid of several teams. Lose some of the garbage and you will have more talent to go around. It is not going to happen obviously, but it should. I am still waiting for you to tell me where ALL this new talent will suddenly come from by lowering the cap. Cap or no cap you will still have a watered down league and have too many teams with barely one good line. You won't make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

What's wrong with the Leafs these days??? The good doc was counting on them to beat up the Thrashers yesterday so they won't come too close to the Sabres in standing. LOL!!! If Maurice allowed them to go golfing, he should be the first one to be fired.

and yet another, 'i was happy with how we played tonight' post game comment from Maurice.

i guess if you set your standards low enough, you won't be disappointed...

BTW- Islanders audience draw tonight only 8,741 to see their Atlantic 1st place team play!! This used to be one of the better sellout crowds south of the border years ago.
