Israel media says about 85 so-called “bunker-buster” bombs were used.
Also known as “ground penetration munition”, these missiles burrow deep into the ground before they detonate.
They have the power to destroy underground facilities and reinforced concrete buildings.
The bombs each weigh between 2,000 and 4,000 pounds.
They can penetrate 30 metres of earth or six metres of concrete and also create shockwaves that can collapse other structures.
The Geneva Convention outlaws the use of these bombs in densely populated areas due to the risk of mass and indiscriminate casualties.
