Are you saying you would trade Matthews for Matthew straight up? Tkatchuk is more of a set up guy than a goal scorer.
He has 20 goals this season. For comparison Marner has 22. He's a setup guy for Reinhart as Marner is for Matthews.
What he obviously is that Marner isn't is that he hits and he's a pest so for obvious reasons take Tkatchuk over Marner.
But for Matthews no way, not even close.

Florida was a very good team before they had Tkatchuk. They won the President's Trophy. They have good players and not just MT. Brady his brother is bigger, scores more and he fights, MT doesn't. Yet, Ottawa is nowhere near good. When MT was in Calgary his line in the regular season was very good but they did nothing in the playoffs. Nothing in the playoffs for every season he was there. He won 1 playoff round in Calgary.

When Florida made the playoffs last year they were the 16th seeded team and needed help from Pittsburgh to lose their final 2 games to Chicago and Columbus to get in. They beat Boston in Game 7 in OT. Leafs lost to Boston in OT in Game 7 with Reimer and 2 other times to Boston in Game 7. That is the difference. Florida had a good playoff run. That happens. Montreal did that one season as well recently.

Matthews is having a Hall of Fame career. Can you say that about Tkatchuk? He may not even be the best player in Florida.

No, Auston Matthews is the best player from the 2016 draft...but...Tkachuk is probably the second best and yes I think Tkachuk is on his way to a HOF career.

Matthews 533 games 347 goals 613 pts +129
Matthew 565 games 212 goals 555 pts +128

Tkatchuk is currently under a point per game in his career albeit slightly.
His last 2 seasons were plus 100 points and he's playing for a team that should be a cup contender during his prime so concur his trajectory is towards a Hall of Fame career but I wouldn't say it's a slam dunk whereas Matthews certainly is.
Matthews is behind only Bossy and Lemieux for goals per game post colour TV. I don't know what category you could put Tkatchuk in as amongst the best all time.

Let's compare Marner's to Tkatchuk's career stats.
Marner 558 games 190 goals 616 pts +106
More than a point per game.
I would not consider Marner a slam dunk Hall of Famer either.

Matthews is the best player in the 2016 draft if the Leafs had the 2nd pick it should be Tkachuk. No one is saying to trade Matthews for Tkachuk.

But the Leafs didn't have the 2nd pick. They had the 1st so I just presumed that since you brought up Tkatchuk ... but you clarified there was no other consideration for 1st overall pick.

Correction:
I mentioned Brady is a better goal scorer than Matthew earlier. That is incorrect.
They score at about the same rate per game with Brady being just slightly lower.
Matthew gets plenty more assists hence the better points totals. His goals to assists ratio is about 1 to 1.6
Brady is almost 1 to 1 ratio. Interestingly Keith was also 1 to 1 ratio with slightly more goals than assists.
So Brady is probably more like his father. Keith scored at about .45 goals per game for 538 goals total.
Almost a goal every 2 games. Both Brady and Matthew score at just slightly better than a goal every 3 games.
So Keith is the better goal scorer than both his sons. Keith, btw, is not in the Hall of Fame.

Roenick, btw, had 3 100 plus point seasons and over 500 goals and he's not in the Hall of Fame so it's not a slam dunk.

500 goals is a big help to get into the HHOF (e.g. Sundin).

On the other hand, Stanley Cups and/or being a great defensive player also help. I could name some players with less than 500 goals who are in the HHOF but don't want to start a controversy.

P.S. It is possible that McDavid and Matthews could end up in the HHOF without ever winning a Cup.

Leafs win 4-2. I didn't notice the kid Rifai which is a good thing for a defenseman, he played 11:33, plus/minus zero, 1 shot, and 1 hit. Good outing for his 1st NHL game.

Nylander 3 short handed goals. Only 4 players have more than 3
Leafs have been pumping in PP goals lately. They're now 2nd behind only TB.
Leafs are the highest scoring team in the East.
McMann has speed, size, and can shoot. He should be in the starting lineup for the playoffs.

Tanev and/or Hanifin. There are rumours but one never knows.
Leafs PK is near the bottom. Calgary has a very good PK.
They are 4th ahead of 5th ranked Florida.

Right shot Tanev and left shot Hanifin are Calgary's top 2 D according to TOI on the PK.
Both are +10 on a team that has a -8 goal differential.

Tanev leads his team in blocked shots with 159.
For comparison Brodie leads the Leafs with 114 blocked shots.

Hanifin leads their D in goals with 9. He also plays a whopping 23:45 TOI. Second on the team.
For comparison Rielly leads the Leafs D with 7 goals and leads the team in TOI at 24:21

Either one will be costly.
