TSN(Pierre Lebrun) reporting Spezza resigned before Shanahan's press conference.
Never understand why does a highly paid GM needs a $3million a year special assistant. Why is Sheldon Keefe still around? May be they are waiting for the new GM to do the dirty job of firing.

I‘d say whoever they trade out of the core 3 will largely depend on what they’re offered. I can see a team which is already a playoff team may want Nylander the most because he has shown that he has better playoff numbers than the other two. That team may be willing to take his inconsistency in the regular season.

Whereas a team trying to get into the playoffs may want either Matthews or Marner because both have shown that either can help them to get into the playoffs.

I would be willing to listen offers for any one of the three. As for Tavares, we’re stuck with the remainder of his awful contract, thanks to Dubas.

Yes, but Marner has been continually useless in the playoffs. The Leafs have to trade Marner ASAP, while he still has two yrs, remaining on his contract. Hopefully, the Leafs can trade Marner by July 1/2023, before Marner's no-move clause, kicks in.
Two separate issues. Should they trade Marner? Yes. If they decide not to trade him, will he re-sign with a pay cut? Fuck no.

Sebastian Aho and Mitch Marner became RFA in the same year.

"Sebastian Aho signed a 5 year, $42,295,000 contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Jul. 1, 2019. The contract has a cap hit of $8,460,250."

Just had a chance to watch Shanahan’s explanation of the timeline of the contract extension talks with the Dubas camp and reading between the lines, here’s what I suspect what actually happened :

- After the first round win Shanahan was going to offer Dubas a contract extension ;

- he and Dubas‘ agent had reached some kind of agreement on what the numbers were going to be, X amount if the Leafs should lose to the Panthers and Y amount should the Leafs advance further; the Y amount would be substantially higher;

- after the Leafs got eliminated Dubas’ agent must have received indications from another club that they’re willing to offer him an amount close to the Y amount that the Leafs would have offered should the Leafs advance past the Panthers;

- Shanahan was reluctant to budge;

- Dubas tried to force his hand by coming out with the “family pressure “ bullshit and Shanny was pissed and decided not to offer any extension at all.

However, Dubas said in his press conference that if he didn't re-sign with the Leafs we wouldn't see him working for another team. That would make another teams offer moot.

You really believe that? He’s only 37 and he’s not going to work for another team but the the Leafs ?

Maybe he did that hoping to get fired. What is his severance package?

However, he probably damaged his prospects with other teams.
The Leafs don’t need to ”fire” him. He’s a contractor and his contract expires on June 30, 2023.

There’s a lot of teams looking for new coaches and GM’s, Leafs might not get the one they want.
