Why is everyone bending over backwards for this guy? Even though he is not French born, and yet he is so typical. Good on him, he showed that he is classless and doesnt have the mental tempermant to hold his own on a world stage. Remember, this is not uncommon for him, he has done this stuff before, and was sent off in WC 98 and missed 1 game in this years WC! Sac du blu, Italy are 2006 WC Champs, and thats the bottom line.

he is French born. You must be mixing him up with that Algerian born French designers Yves St Laurent. Zidane was born in France to Algerian immigrants. Zidane maybe be classless in your eyes but at least he doesnt go around uttering racist remarks like some people. Zidane is one of the greatest players of all time and better than ANY player Italy has ever produced. He has his world cup, his euro cup and his champions league title and his world player of the year title and now the golden ball. Zidane maybe be 'classless' but he is pure class.

Thanks for the memories ZZ! You were GREAT. Up there with Pele, Diego, Bestie, Cruyff, Ronaldo, DiStefano and Garrincha.

No one is bending over backwards for Zidane... everyone has pretty much agreed that it was the right call to give him the red card.... and anyone who condones his actions are not considering that he is part of a team...captain no less and needed to show better judgement...

However, you talk about classless yet Italy has guys like Materazzi (although I like his tenacity) who has admitted to pinching Zidane's nipple in an effort to throw Zidane off his game...you can't beat him in skill only, so you have to resort to underhanded tactics... That is not something to be proud of...

I am not going to persecute Materazzi for trying to get Zidane off his game (but I would not celebrate his tactics), same goes for the taunting and verbal jousting that goes on in any competitive sport..... however, there is a line that needs to be drawn that should not be crossed.... comments about family, racism, religious persecution, illness, etc are as low as you can get... its beginning to sound like Materazzi crossed all of those lines...

Either that or Materazzi teased Zidane by pinching his nipple, Materazzi then refused to continue the foreplay, Zidane got pissed off and headbutt him...

i dont see your point about St Clair and people wearing Italian jerseys. I wear Brazil jerseys and I am not Brazilian. I wear Barcelona jerseys and ManU jerseys and I am not from the countries that those teams play in.

Please tell me what that has to do with Materazzi. Everyone hates Italians? Where did you get that? Me thinks you need to learn to separate a football team and some of its diehard(hardline) fans with everyday people.

Zidane's response could not be seen, before Materazzi replied:

"We all know you are the son of a terrorist whore."

Then, just before the butt, he said: "So just f... off."

Italian newspapers claim that Zidane started the tit-for-tat insults by insulting Materazzi's mother, who died when he was young.

Yes, John Rocker was opnely racist. You can't change someone's beliefs. But every time he opened his mouth and said something stupid, he was fined. Finally the Braves kicked him off the team. He wasn't tolerated.

The token minorities on the French team? Only 3 of the starters (Sagnol, Barthez and Ribery who is now muslim) are white. Then look at their bench and you call that TOKEN>????

Token can be the single black guys who played for Russia and Poland in the past.

Token is the black guy Aragones put on Spain's team to try and prove he isnt racist.

Token could be the Ghanaian on Germany's team or the half German-half Ghanaian winger Ononkor on the the same German team.

Token is NOT what France has. out of that squad of 23 about 16 to 18 of them are so called minorities.

England has quite a few racists but England doesnt tolerate racists in their football. Italy, like every single nation on this planet, is full of nice people so thats not the issue. Zidane has a history of such behaviour. When te World Cup comes on people that don't watch soccer come out of the wood work pretending to be experts. Meanwhile they don't know a thing. Zidane is one of the world's greatest soccer players of all time. However, that includes a history of losing his temper unexpectedly and head butting not only yesterday but other players. How people quickly forget what he did to that Suadi player in the 1998 World Cup.

Hey Marco.....how old are you?....I'm 51 and my first World Cup on tv was in 1966, when did you start calcio?....so, the only thing we know for sure is that insults were thrown and Zidane would only react for something very serious......the italians, as much as I have admired their players and football teams through the years, can be complete assholes and will resort to any tactics. So when the truth comes out, don't be surprised if the insult was a very serious one...and Materazzi has his own past.

I agree that things like that should be settled outside the stadium.... but you must also agree that taunts and insults should not be part of the game either.... racist remarks, remarks about a persons family etc should not be part of the game...

Ah, but I wasn't condoning Materazzi's alleged behaviour. We stil don't know exactly what he said. It's all allegations at this point. If, however, he did make a racist slur, then FIFA has an obligation to appropriately punish Materazzi, as well.

I was making a point about physical violence, which immediately and obviously hurts some one. If it can be proven, beyond the heresay and sensationalism of the press, that racist remarks were made, or verbal abuse was hurled, then we also punish the verbal culprit.

Funny enough, I did not see any visible minorities on the Italian team... There must be some people of color playing football in Italy???
