Why is everyone bending over backwards for this guy? Even though he is not French born, and yet he is so typical. Good on him, he showed that he is classless and doesnt have the mental tempermant to hold his own on a world stage. Remember, this is not uncommon for him, he has done this stuff before, and was sent off in WC 98 and missed 1 game in this years WC! Sac du blu, Italy are 2006 WC Champs, and thats the bottom line.

P.S. Did anyone see the day after when they were in France, and he was waving to the fans? Show more enthusiam buddy, he just waves like a dumb cave man!!
he is French born. You must be mixing him up with that Algerian born French designers Yves St Laurent. Zidane was born in France to Algerian immigrants. Zidane maybe be classless in your eyes but at least he doesnt go around uttering racist remarks like some people. Zidane is one of the greatest players of all time and better than ANY player Italy has ever produced. He has his world cup, his euro cup and his champions league title and his world player of the year title and now the golden ball. Zidane maybe be 'classless' but he is pure class.

Thanks for the memories ZZ! You were GREAT. Up there with Pele, Diego, Bestie, Cruyff, Ronaldo, DiStefano and Garrincha.

No one is bending over backwards for Zidane... everyone has pretty much agreed that it was the right call to give him the red card.... and anyone who condones his actions are not considering that he is part of a team...captain no less and needed to show better judgement...

However, you talk about classless yet Italy has guys like Materazzi (although I like his tenacity) who has admitted to pinching Zidane's nipple in an effort to throw Zidane off his game...you can't beat him in skill only, so you have to resort to underhanded tactics... That is not something to be proud of...

I am not going to persecute Materazzi for trying to get Zidane off his game (but I would not celebrate his tactics), same goes for the taunting and verbal jousting that goes on in any competitive sport..... however, there is a line that needs to be drawn that should not be crossed.... comments about family, racism, religious persecution, illness, etc are as low as you can get... its beginning to sound like Materazzi crossed all of those lines...

Either that or Materazzi teased Zidane by pinching his nipple, Materazzi then refused to continue the foreplay, Zidane got pissed off and headbutt him...

You make it sound like it was the first time it was ever done! I can imagine the Italian players have to deal with remarks far worse then what was allegedly said. Remember everyone hates Italians, unitl they win. It's funny, they bash the team before during the WC.

Knowone is denying what Matarzzi said, he even admits to saying something durogatory to him. In the end, Fabio raised the cup the other night, and over 500,000 people crammed St.Clair for the party. By the way, I saw hundreds of people wearing the Italy jersey, and they were not Italian.

i dont see your point about St Clair and people wearing Italian jerseys. I wear Brazil jerseys and I am not Brazilian. I wear Barcelona jerseys and ManU jerseys and I am not from the countries that those teams play in.

Please tell me what that has to do with Materazzi. Everyone hates Italians? Where did you get that? Me thinks you need to learn to separate a football team and some of its diehard(hardline) fans with everyday people.

You think DiCanio was a one off deal???????

He used to play in England for West Ham United. I don't remember him doing this and having teh crowd love it.

I think for some people the party on St.Clair and drowning in a sea of flags was more important than the soccer part of it. Nothing wrong with that. Everybody likes a good party. btw, how can you tell they were not Italian?

But last night Materazzi's agent Phil Smith revealed the Italian's version of what happened.

He said it began when Materazzi grabbed the Frenchman's shirt, pinching his nipple. "If you want my shirt so much, then you can f...... have it after the game," Zidane supposedly said.

"I'd rather have the shirt off your woman," Materazzi responded, a reference to Zidane's wife Veronique. Ka-boom.

The opposite version, according to lipreaders, goes that moments after he had grabbed Zidane's shirt Materazzi said: "Hold on, wait, that one's not for c.... like you."

Zidane's response could not be seen, before Materazzi replied:

"We all know you are the son of a terrorist whore."

Then, just before the butt, he said: "So just f... off."

Italian newspapers claim that Zidane started the tit-for-tat insults by insulting Materazzi's mother, who died when he was young.

If what zinedine did surprised you then you must have never seen him play before, (not the first assult) and the slant by Marco of his heritage is BS. Completely false allegation, not to be entertained at all.
Is being from Algeria the worst thing in the world??

It isn't like he called him Canadian or anything....LOL

Seriously - is that the worse insult in the world - to be accused of hailing from the continent of Africa?

I'm not sure Mr. Materazzi is the big racist here if that was the case...

Of course there are racist everywhere...

are pretty well diversified amongst all nations around the world....as well as the makeup of the individual teams.

Why don't you just call Canadians rascists too?

There are rascists everywhere...I hope you're somehow not implying that English fans and players are not rascist....that American fans/players are not rascist....South American, German etc etc....NEWS FLASH ....its everywhere!
...that isn't the point.

The point is that it appears to be permitted, condoned or even sanctioned in some places.

Or have you seen a Nazi swaztika being held aloft in any arena in the US or Canada? Have you heard thousands of people join together in a racist taunt anywhere in the U.S. or Canada?

MLAM,

you want racism?

click on the news on any night. Watch the Israeli's and Palestinians go at it every night. Don't label an entire people racist because of one wingnut soccer player.

By the way, baseball recently had an openly racist pitcher. Guess everyone in the United States including the late Martin Luther is racist.

Or let's not mention what Iran's soccer players did not too long ago. Guess all of Iran is racist.

But of course France with token minorties on the team are not racist. Wonder why they had those horrible race riots recently?

The main problem is that people forget that the World Cup is supposed to bring people closer together. Not to point to a nation's faults right after a soccer tournament.

By the way, check Italy's refugee policies. United Nations rate them better then Canada's since the 1960s

...did I label an entire people racist? Please - cut and paste for me.

Yes, John Rocker was opnely racist. You can't change someone's beliefs. But every time he opened his mouth and said something stupid, he was fined. Finally the Braves kicked him off the team. He wasn't tolerated.

The token minorities on the French team? Only 3 of the starters (Sagnol, Barthez and Ribery who is now muslim) are white. Then look at their bench and you call that TOKEN>????

Token can be the single black guys who played for Russia and Poland in the past.

Token is the black guy Aragones put on Spain's team to try and prove he isnt racist.

Token could be the Ghanaian on Germany's team or the half German-half Ghanaian winger Ononkor on the the same German team.

Token is NOT what France has. out of that squad of 23 about 16 to 18 of them are so called minorities.

Token minorities? What are you smoking?
Take a look at the team.

I count 16 out of 23 not including Zidane that qualify as a visible minority. And they are not token, they count as some of the best players on the team, Henry, Vieira, Malouda. And, I am surprised Henry hasn't weighed in on this as he is often a target of racism.
Maybe you should go back to St.Clair and do some more dancing.

again it seems Kathleen and others fail to realise the difference between a racist society and the tolerance of racism in football. Italy and Spain tolerate it by their non actions. England has quite a few racists but England doesnt tolerate racists in their football. Italy, like every single nation on this planet, is full of nice people so thats not the issue. Their football federation on the other hand seems odd to say the least

You think Aragones would keep his jon in England?? No, but he did in Spain. Do you think what happens in Italy at their stadia will be tolerated in England? Not in this day and age. It seems Italy and Spain could care less.

Zidane has a history of such behaviour. When te World Cup comes on people that don't watch soccer come out of the wood work pretending to be experts. Meanwhile they don't know a thing. Zidane is one of the world's greatest soccer players of all time. However, that includes a history of losing his temper unexpectedly and head butting not only yesterday but other players. How people quickly forget what he did to that Suadi player in the 1998 World Cup.
Hey Marco.....how old are you?....I'm 51 and my first World Cup on tv was in 1966, when did you start calcio?....so, the only thing we know for sure is that insults were thrown and Zidane would only react for something very serious......the italians, as much as I have admired their players and football teams through the years, can be complete assholes and will resort to any tactics. So when the truth comes out, don't be surprised if the insult was a very serious one...and Materazzi has his own past.

I agree that things like that should be settled outside the stadium.... but you must also agree that taunts and insults should not be part of the game either.... racist remarks, remarks about a persons family etc should not be part of the game...

So how can you condemn Zidane for his stupidity/poor sportsmanship while allowing Materazzi to get away with his poor sportsmanship
Ah, but I wasn't condoning Materazzi's alleged behaviour. We stil don't know exactly what he said. It's all allegations at this point. If, however, he did make a racist slur, then FIFA has an obligation to appropriately punish Materazzi, as well.

I was making a point about physical violence, which immediately and obviously hurts some one. If it can be proven, beyond the heresay and sensationalism of the press, that racist remarks were made, or verbal abuse was hurled, then we also punish the verbal culprit.

Slowandeasy, we are on the same wavelength, don't worry!

Funny enough, I did not see any visible minorities on the Italian team... There must be some people of color playing football in Italy???
