cubs wanted a quality lefty

I wonder if they discussed happ ?

I would have thrown in Liriano, Estrada, Smith, Howell, and Pearce
Houston may be a good fit for Estrada or Happ. They have a highly touted outfielder, Kyle Tucker, and the Jays could use some OF support.

they need more pitching depth to draw from in their system IMHO but they have a couple of good prospects in both the outfield and in the infield as well as a not ready for prime time catcher

Especially Dylan Cease. He's got a 100MPH heater and has a 2.54 ERA in 3 minor L. seasons:

Doesnt strike me as a smart trade by the Cubs
Quintana is locked in till 2020 and has been pitching well last few starts

could have been a move to satisfy fans and energize team

BTW, this trading shit is more interesting then watching the Jays lose

Cant wait till the jays make some moves, the bigger the better

I hope some team like the Yanks make an offer for JD the jays cant refuse

Two top prospects & 2 other minor league players, is a much more accurate description.
Matt Rose & Bryant Flete are not top prospects.
The other two players in the trade, Eloy Jiminez (5) & Dylan Cease (83) are highly rated in Baseball America's midseason report.

Thanks gcostanza. Knew I could count on you to google the details for me.

Great to see VG Jr rocket to #2 prospect after a good first half. Bichette also made a big move. Alford still up there despite injury. No sign of Tellez or any of our top pitchers.

JD is a perennial MVP candidate? I can't see that sort of deal ever taking place. He would merit the entire upper farm system of the buyer.

Kind of a no brainer for me for two reasons:

1) The cubs window to win is now. This team is thinking about 2 or 3 years down the road.

2) Prospects are just that... "Prospects". Half the time even "top prospects" that get dealt in a trade, you never hear about them again, other than some trivia question like "who was Jose Bautista traded for?"....waited for it....Robinzon Diaz.

He is also a free agent next year so trade him and rebuild

Jays seem quite concerned about competeing next year.

What about 2019 and beyond. Time for a serious rebuild

Trading this years FA is not a rebuild.

Red Sox DFA Sandaval. He is owed close to $50,000,000.00 by the Sox.
The Panda cashed in big on his moment of glory in the WS a few years ago with the SF Giants and has been loafing it ever since. At least, he will now have more time to tweet at hotties on Twitter in the club house between AB's now he's in the minors. And eat more food, I guess, and grow even fatter.

So what does DFA do? Does that get the Sox out of the $50M they owe him? That's a lot of Twinkies!
They are on the hook for the entire remainder.

Unless they can find some suckers in the next few days with a huge clubhouse buffet and an appetite for bad contracts to trade him to they may try ship him to the minors again if he has options.

They will probably just release him. At that point any team can sign him for the prorated league minimum salary so he gets 2 cheques!

Would be interesting to know if he lost his passion and secretly didn't care if he got cut or not. Would explain the failure to diet thing.
