+1 on this. Gun control laws cannot stop all nutters from owning guns but it will prevent some. Laws against murder do not stop all murders but they make some think twice before doing so. Frankly though, there is something seriously messed up and unhinged in American culture such that these mass shootings keep happening. Laws can only do so much in a context of broad social decline and decadence. In a way Trump is right that the countries need to stop looking to the US for leadership and finance. I would agree because the cost of hitching your star to the US is too costly when one looks at the failed military intervention based of faked intelligence, the financial crisis courtesy of US financial regulation, their inability to place their national government on a sound financial footing, a President that brags about pussy grabbing and wins, messed up race relations, the opiod crisis and the rise of the alt-Right. It is time for Canada to say thanks for the great party but we best be going now....

No State has any licensing requirement close to what it takes to drive a vehicle. And it should be standardized. In my opinion, #1 reason is for safety since I am convinced that the majority of gun owners do not know enough about safe handling of their weapon. Criminals will always be able to acquire a weapon. But psycho’s and borderline personality types may have more difficulty getting a weapon and ammunition illegally simply because of their affliction. And why make it easy to do it legally? Also ideally (which would admittedly be difficult to implement) there should be red flags that will pop up on background checks if a person is under psychiatric care, was convicted of domestic abuse, etc.

Directly above the center of the earth
the US Constitution says
Article [II] (Amendment 2 - Bearing Arms)

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

However, the NRA and its members, have selectively interpreted this amendment. I heard on the radio that the national HQ of the NRA, only the second part is on display (bigly) at the building's entrance.

And the comment about everyone having guns, I will assume it was meant sarcastically (someone's tone rarely transfers to the written word). This reminds me of Archie Bunker explaining how to end gun crimes.

Don't you look pretty smart. He loved wearing his MAGA hat.
I'm just as smart as you I guess since it's well known that the MAGA hat pic is a fake account, probably set up by heavy.com who are reporting their '5 facts about the shooter'. They left out that according to voter rolls in 2017 and 2016 Cruz was a registered Democrat.

It seems to me that this isn't a guy making a political statement, he was just a mentally deranged evil individual. Should not have been able to acquire a legal firearm I agree. However, this may have been preventable if the FBI were more vigilant in their investigation of him. School expulsions, threats on his social media account, killing small animals - the signs were so apparent.

Hindsight is always 20/20. The simple fact is the US has demonstrated time and time again an inability to keep guns out of the hands of "crazies". This coupled with seemingly not having the resolve to try anything different probably dooms them to confronts this tragedy time and time again.

Blaming the FBI, although fashionable in some circles, seems overly simplistic without tossing an equal measure of blame in the direction of the NRA and Government .

Um. I'm not sure how to respond to this. Are you insinuating it's the medication and not the mental illness being treated as the main cause?
The pills have the undesirable, unintended side effects of violence and suicide listed on the bottle. That in conjunction with the potential mental illness is what seems to be the pattern. You also have to realize that many people taking these pills dont actually have a mental illness,my dog died,i'm depressed doctor,ok take these......

Same way they're handing out painkillers in the US these days. Had your wisdom teeth removed and are in a bit of discomfort, here take 60 tablets of oxycontin, that'll get rid of it for ya

People are now focusing on the mental health issues but all kinds of people around the world have these issues also but they don't shoot up schools or concerts... or at least to a far, far less degree than in the US. The fetishization of guns in the US and the density of gun ownership must be part of the issue but necessarily the only causal driver.

Coincidentally almost every mass shooter in recent US history from columbine to vegas ,was on meds. Draw your own conclusions. Non medicated people don't seem to behave in this way.

I am not referring to this specific individual.

Mainstream media does not touch this subject. It is easier to scream gun control(i'm not a gun owner, don't like them)

But,once again, when you see how much advertising is done by the manufacturers of these drugs,I don't think a struggling radio, television or newspaper would dare run the story.

And if they are not already struggling(most are) they soon would be without pharma advertising.

I believe 72 % of all tv ad revenue is from them.So to do the story is economic suicide.

A combination of easy access and a gun and drug culture.

The last thing I saw on a bio on the shooter was that he had been under care but hadnt been for a year.

So I'm betting he wasn't on meds.

BB was I believe correct that there is far more danger when mentally ill DON'T take their meds then when they do.

Congress will do nothing, Americans love their guns more than their children.

Next up - a psycho will shoot up a maternity ward.

I am certain that if the founding fathers of the US, had known how deadly firearms would become, they would have written the second amendment differently.

Personally I believe, that the US needs to develop a tactical response training for teachers in every school. The only deterrent to would be shooters, will be knowing that they will face a superior force. Train the teachers to be able to respond to any threat with overwhelming force, and I assure you school shooting will become a thing of the past. Teachers, should also be demanding such a training, since their lives are in just as much danger.

You can see that pieces of shit like the shooter, quickly gave up.

An overwhelming force is the best response, just look at Switzerland, no one ever fucked with them, because they have one of the best army's in the world.

Yeah, let's make school even more awkward for most students. Militarize the faculty.
