Legal requirement for unions to ensure that the rights of their members are protected. They're there not to prevent people from getting fired but simply to ensure that it is done following labour law. It's like you're asking why Lawyers put up with clients charged with crimes.

Of course not.
This also got international attention and there are likely to be many protesters with no connection to the school at all.
It makes perfect sense they would warn the parents of the protest.
They should be serving the students, whose interests are represented by the parents. Instead, they are serving their future political aspirations.
