actually Mario Dumont is hardly a separatist, his party's platform is putting the whole separatism thing on the back burner but of course pushing for more powers for Quebec, he would get along with Harper just based on their ideology of less government, lower taxes etc etc which flies in the face of the Parti Quebecois and traditional seperatist voters who tend to be left of centre in their ideology, this is why Bouchard and Landry got ditched by the movement they couldnt compromise their fiscal conservative ideas with the larger Quebec separatist base.Latte said:
Well it looks like the Liberals are going to get their clocks cleaned in the upcoming election. The Liberals are lead by an old man who should have been prime minister 10 years ago, and instead of focusing on the conservative party he is still fighting the old Chretien faction of the party.
Harper, to his credit was smart enough to water down and sugar coat his true intentions with a pretty slickly run smoke and mirrors type campaign, i.e policies that most traditional Liberal voters would approve of without publicly catering to the majority of the extreme right wing conservative element of the party... At the same time, the conservatives have issued, and have successfuly enforced a strict gag order on their candidates. Sort of a "code of silence", don't tell the people what you believe in, just tell them what they want to hear. So strategically, they kicked the liberals ass and I commend them for that.
But lets not kid ourselves here. Its one thing to keep your party quiet during a 3 or 4 week election campaign. Its another thing to keep them quiet for 3 or 4 years. Sooner or later, the majority of candidates will state their true feelings and Canadians will disagree with them. Assuming the conservatives win the election, as soon as the reality sets in that a bunch of red neck hillbillies are running the country, with an idiot like Stockwell Day as your Minister of Foreign Affairs, and some bible thumping anti abortion fanatic as your justice minister, its just a matter of waiting for the next election before Canada goes back to the Liberals.

It’s possible that you’re right (although we don’t know who will be in the next cabinet yet, so we don’t’ know). However, the liberals will have a few years in opposition to reform themselves. Thus, if you are right, I would predict that the next liberal government will be an improvement on this one, thanks in part to having a few years to get their act together.Argocock said:

This reminds me of all those ridiculous end of the world predictions the liberals made regarding free trade back in the 1988 election. The fact is that Red is likely right when he says the outcome of the election will not make a big difference in people’s everyday life.
