Forget the "civilzation" part. The most obvious symptom of the moral collapse of the West is the support and complicity of their governments and elites in an on-going GENOCIDE. And these Western elites who have always insisted that "democracy" is a Western copyright, ( and the rest of the world is neither capable nor deservant ) are willing to ignore their own polities who find genocide repugnant. Their solution seems to be to buy out as many media empires and impose their own Orwellian narrative; what Chomsky called 'manufacturing consent".

You are pointing out that "The West"/"Western Civilization" is a social construct that has evolved and changed over the years, but he's hearing it as "Western Civilization isn't real". The Eastern Roman Empire had been at war with neighbours for decades.
With the civil war and various political unrest, they saw their chance to grab some land back using someone else's troops.
The pope had reasons of his own to try and "save" the Eastern Church with the recent schism.
Hence, the classic "we will go and fight a foreign war for the people who think they should control Jerusalem" thing.
