It doesn't really matter how Michael Steele intended or not intended the dossier to be used. We have information manufactured by Russian sources entering U.S. intelligence circles.
I don't know what to make of Comey. He seems to be a revisionist trying to salvage his legacy as a divisive figure. Comey said of the Steele Dossier “It was coming from a credible source, someone with a track record, someone who was a credible and respected member of an allied intelligence service during his career.”
Comey has said the FBI tried to verify the information in the dossier independently, but it wasn't the reason the FBI investigation was opened. However if you have a concern for the FBI maintaining objectivity and risking confirmation bias, this statement is troubling.
"this guy, who's credible, says these things are true. Okay. That means we should try and replicate that work to see if we can develop the same sources."
So take the House Republicans out of it for a moment..........I know, I know. They're so bad. They suck. Yeah, it's pretty much how many Republicans think of Adam "I have seen the evidence" Schiff.
So put the House Republicans aside, you have an FBI that is routinely dealing with unscrupulous foreign characters who often are trying to manipulate them and others in our government.
Just for clarity, it's Christopher Steele. Michael Steele is the former head of the RNC...
Also, just because Chuck Grassley and other GOPers says the Steele Dossier was Russian disinformation doesn't make it so. No official in the FBI said it was, there were just two footnotes in a document that talked about the possibility. Now, I'm not saying the dossier was 100% factual. Even Steele himself said as much, because a lot of the info was unverified or unverifiable.
As for Comey, it isn't troubling. Imagine if you got a doc that had evidence of conspiracy and didn't investigate. That is malpractice. That is a major issue. What if the Trump campaign was competent and was able to engage with the Russians for election help? Russia appeared wanting to help.
Anyways, the bottomline is that with Steele's Dossier, the FBI was already looking at Trump's campaign for Russian ties because of, Popoduopulus (I think) having a big mouth and concerning an Australian diplomat.
But the bottom line is, Christopher Steele NEVER lied to the FBI. While he did send his info to the intelligence services in the US & UK, he never claimed they were facts, mostly because they were unverified things.
