you're not quite on the mark with that one.
alot of teams that have 'gotten bad' have done so also because of the financial inability to do well. (NYI, CHI, STL, PIT) or are fairly new franchises in unexploited or weak hockey markets. (ATL, TB, CAR, PHX, FLO)
the #1 pick overall doesn't mean you are drafting a superstar either. Rick Dipietro, Patrik Stefan, Rick Nash, Alexandre Daigle, Eric Lindros- all somewhat examples of those... in fact none througout history have done what Crosby is doing. he was just a special pick. it wasn't like Pittsburgh was throwing the season... if only athletes were bred that way... lol
anyways, there isn't likely another Crosby calibre player to come along for quite some time now. Ovechkin is close, but one has to remember that Crosby is still 1 year younger than the age at which Ovechkin has played his first NHL game. Crosby is still TOO YOUNG to play in the AHL and is now only the AVERAGE AGE of an OHL player. BTW, Ovechkin was at 49 pts. this far into his season last year at this time.
hockey changed as of last season... it's now more a factor of good management, good coaching, good drafting and the like.
i remember when JFJr was hired. he had a plan. though he never disclosed what that plan was- it seems like he didn't have much of a plan at all. his moves are in every direction except up.
