you are correct Never$$. i think most leaf fans are in disbelief that this actually occured.

i'd wish them to enjoy the small moment. they are few and far between this season.

FYI- both games in Pittsburgh sold out. Met a few Canadians at the Carolina game, including the Staal Family from Thunder Bay.
I could have sworn I saw Mrs. Staal on tv at the Canada - USA semifinal game on Wednesday. If so, she is a real jetsetter. They interviewed her (if I am not mistaken) along with Mrs Parent (Ryan's mom). These two kids have played together for several years in Thunder Bay and as juniors (Marc and Ryan). Anyone else see them? I was in the other room when the interview came on but I was pretty sure it was her. Maybe not.

I didn't see Mrs. in Pittsburgh, but I did chat with Mr. Staal in the guest lists lounge area after the game. And yeah, I saw her on tsn, too. At first I thought some lady that was talkin to Mr. Staal was his wife... guess I was wrong. the two looked nothing alike.

BTW- got a story I can share...

Anyways, I got on the guest list because I am friends with Chris Thorburn's family... (my bro was Thorbz best buddy since they were squirts and played hockey together all the way up...) So, anyways, I was chattin' with his older brother Mike about the Pens and his bro and stuff. he brought up a few weeks ago when Chris fought Chris Simon of the NYI's... I said WTF?? is your bro nuts?? and that was right when Chris Thorburn joined us, and the conversation...

So, I heard it from him 1st. Anyways, he said about halfway into the 1st period right after the Penguins went up 2-1 on the Islanders Thorburn found himself lined up with Simon at the face-off. Simon tells Thorbz, 'when the puck drops, we're gonna square off.' Thorbz slightly taken aback by this and says, 'what?'... Simon: 'you heard me. when the play starts, FIGHT ME'... before Thorbz had a chance to think about it, the play is in action and Simon's already got his gloves on the ice and is moving in on Thorbz.

For some that don't know, Simon is perhaps the #1 most intimidating player in the NHL. He doesn't fight often as he doesn't need to. He's gettin' later in his career, but still gets his respect. Thorburn is no pushover either, but he's aliken to more of a Ondrus, Bell, Brown (for leaffans) type of tough guy.

Anyways, Thorburn new he couldn't back down so he jumped right into what he knew to do...they exchanged a few blows back and forth before Simon made good and finished Thorburn off with a couple good shots to his forehead and his nose, which Thorbz admits, is hard to miss... lol.

So after they serve their major PIMs and in the 1st Intermission dressing room Mark Recchi calls Thorburn out into the hallway for a 1on1 speech... Thorburn was scared, he didn't know what he did wrong. To his surprise, Recchi said that he wanted to let him know that the team really appreciates everything he does for them and what he did by fighting Simon was beyond the call of duty. He had Recchi's approval... for that he said he felt like he was on cloud 9... Anyways, he goes back into the dressing room and gets razzed by a few of his teamates about fighting a 'guy that doesn't like to lose fights- and doesn't lose fights...'... and asking him how he walked away from that, let alone unscarred... Anyways, Michel Therrien peeks his head in the dressing room and says 'Thorburn! come out here and see me.' Thorbz goes out and gets more praize from MT and later gets rewarded by playing the 2nd period on a line with Crosby and Malkin.

So anyways, in the 2nd period Thorburn and Simon face off against eachother again, and what did Thorbz do?
he went to Simon and said 'Thank-you. Thank-you for fighting me. I just realized that it was the biggest thing that has happened to me in my career!' Simon replies, 'I know... your welcome.. and welcome to the NHL kid!'

for people that don't know who Thorburn is, he was a marginal AHLer in the Buffalo Rochester system that didn't give up on his dream of playing in the NHL. he worked his way into the position he is in now, after being released by the Rochester Americans...

Fans really gave it to Raycroft tonight. (the boo's) Anyways, I don't think he's to blame. Toronto knew what they were trading for- and Raycroft is actually got better numbers than last season, so what gives?

In an off season where Luongo, Biron, Cloutier, and DiPietro were all available, among others, the leafs made a wise decision in goal... Raycroft is neither overpaid nor is he expected to be a game stealer.

As I mentioned elsewhere, the success of the man in the pipes depends largely on the defensive play of the team as a whole, and the responsibility taking by the defencemen. For this I can't blame Raycroft.

Gotta disagree, Pro...

..when a team like the Leafs plays an upper ecehlon team such as the Sabres, puts in a very good effort at both ends of the ice, save for the power play, all they need is some solid goaltending. They did not get that tonight. At least 2 of the goals were suspect, the 4th goal being an absolute stinker. Toronto deserved a better fate tonight, and the fact that didn't happen lies in 2 areas...a sub par power play...and a bad effort by Raycroft. I still expect this team to make the playoffs. If they are in a playoff position near the trade deadline, I think the goaltending has to be adressed somehow...

Pittsburgh actually picked Thorburn off the waiver wire when the Sabres went to send Thorburn back here to the Amerks.....

I have a Rochester Americans #16 Thorburn sweaster that I wear to every game....He's a tough guy that shows up for every minute....we miss him here in Rochester....

yeah, you worded it correctly. My guess is you and me alike wish Thorburn a great career!

and i've since found out that there were, according to his dad, atleast 3 teams interested in signing Thorburn when he was waived by the Sabres: the Islanders, the Sharks and the Pens.

that's ok. my main point is Raycroft is still playing with better numbers than last year, on a worse defensive team. that is an improvement.

In no way do I think he's a game stealer- which is what everyone thinks a goalie 'has to be'... well, Giguerre isn't, and either is Budaj... but they are both top 9 goalies because of the team in front of them.

..I'm more on point with Guyroach....I'm not up much on Budaj..but Giggy??..that guy has shown to be an absolute game stealer..especially during the Ducks playoff run. That's the mistake the Leafs made..thinkingit's defense that wins games...a lot of times.. with a bit of offense..goalies can win you 8-10 games a yr you don't deserve..wonder why the Wings wanted Hasek...or why Huet has been sucha factor in the Habs recent sucess..the list goes on and on..

depends which year and what series... he's flopped more than succeeded. and every series he's been a success, the team in front of him played well, also.

Horrible goaltending!!!!!
3 of 4 goals look harmless
He went down too early when an opponent shoot the puck?!
Where is Felix Potvin.
I have season tkts and go to most of the games. What was'nt clear was that although the shots didnt have a lot of speed in a couple of cases Raycroft was totally screened on at least 2 of those. Goal #4 he had no excuse, fluttered in over his shoulder, no screen. Like most butterfly goalies, he goes down early and often. The bok on him league wide is wait a split second, then shoot high blocker or high glove, all he can do is shrug on those shots, like he did on goal 4 Saturday.

I guess this could be chicken/egg argument...

....did Giggy play well, and this gave his team the confidence to play well in front of him??..or did his team play well and make Giggy look good??

I tend to go with the former. Unless you have a Gretzky or a Mario on your team, the only way to have a true game changer is in the nets....Good goaltenders steal games with regularity in the NHL. Raycroft has proven to this point he can't do that.... and for what he is being paid, he must. I'd sure like to see where the Leafs would be had they let McCabe go...and not signed Kubina, insteasd of having 10 mil between those 2, have only 4 mil on 2 competent defenseman...and spent the remaining 6 mil on Luongo..or another top flight goaltender..

you make some very good points. however, Carolina did not have a Gretz or Mario on their team, neither did they have a Brodeur in net. come to think of it, either did Tampa Bay the season before.

evidence of that you DON'T need a Gretz or Mario is seen in looking at Gerber/Ward and Khabibulin in other years... they've proved what they are more likely capable of. don't get me wrong, these are all really good tenders- just, a team can help elevate a goalies level... and yes, vice-versa. but, i see more of a really good goalie playing great when the team in front helps out.

who are the best goalies right now? have they always been the best goalies? No. Not all of them. Now, look at the team that surrounded them during good times and bad. You'll clearly see the difference.

Raycroft isn't to blame.

Right now I'd take Aki Berg over Pavel Kubina... and I also believe it should be Bryan McCabe that's boo'd at the ACC.

Don't worry Leaf nation ... JFJ to the rescue .....

The Maple Leafs have claimed forward Travis Green on waivers from Anaheim on Wednesday, bringing the Castlegar, B.C., native back to Toronto

In August, Green was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Anaheim Ducks. In seven games played this season, Green has one goal and one assist with a plus- 3 rating ...
Was it painful watching the out-of-town scoreboard at the ACC last night? The Sens blew by the Bruins in the third, the Habs more or less did the same. That must have been a sight.

BTW, Travis Green is 36 ...
