Here
Making predictions about the coming season is a fun game, but that's all it is. Fun. The more you read, the more you've seen, the more you realize - nobody knows anything.
And, IMHO, that is precisely why it is such an attractive game. When you really look at the big picture -- the players, the talents, the injuries, the team vibes and dynamics, the league dynamics, the competition, the umpiring, the weather, the good and bad breaks, etc., etc., -- it is all so complex that no one could possibly know.

Which is why people turn to computers, historical performance data and mathematics to calculate the possibilities and probabilities; but even these are, at best, only calculated odds so even these don't predict or know anything...

Which is why it is the game that defines American mentality: betting on the odds based on whatever reasoning makes your boat float.

Me? What floats my boat is the beauty of HD TV which, much more than going to the game, allows me to actually see the player's eyes, faces and body language and understand what is going on between their ears. For me, that is the single most useful and accurate "predictor" of performance that I know and what makes the game enjoyable to watch.

But how the fuck do I do that for 750 players active at any time? So I, like you, don't know shit, either.

The only thing left is reasonably well informed intuition...

That is my story and I am sticking to it. :D

we were a hit short today ...but very entertaining series to kick off the season :)

really liked how Alvarez pitched last year ..he's not a strike you out kind of pitcher but he will get you outs.. I'm quite eager to see how he does this year.

In the Wolf's den
Update - Santos now has two blown saves. For those saying blown saves are a useless stat - tell that to Alvarez who just saw his 2nd major league victory go out the window....

The Blue Jays haven't had a lot of luck in the past with hired gun closers (Bill Caudill, Randy Myers, BJ Ryan), but Santos is looking like he might be the crappiest of them all!

damn, so close! Is Starting pitching a problem or the bullpen?
Starting pitching was not the problem - Closing out the game is.

Surprised this guy has blown two in a row...Yikes.

May be too early to panic, but who else could fill the role? Jansen? They have used him for middle/short relief but he certainly has the stuff to stifle opposition hitters.

O sorry, what I mean is, Will starting pitching be a problem this year, or the bullpen?

Coming in to the year, our bullpen is suppose to be our biggest strength, while the starting pitching is a question mark.

Aside from Santos, the bullpen has been lights out. I think they are solid.

Santos may not be the next Mariano Rivera but he should be decent. This is only his second full year as a closer and he only blew 6 saves all last year with the Sox.

BTW, when did Mitt Romney become the Jays' manager?

After watching some slow motion replays my keen baseball eye also noticed a subtle but dramatic difference in Henderson Alvarez. He got rid of those goofy glasses he wore last year.

For the most part the pitching looks pretty solid. I'm not in the least impressed with the hitting. The batting averages are anemic and very few homers. No playoffs this year if the hitting doesn't improve significantly.

it's just the beginning of the season anyways, but hopefully the next 2 games, we might see a difference in pitchers. if not then we definitely need a better closer

If you look at Santos last season,

SO/BB ratio was pretty good
Save percent was decent

However, 3.55 ERA would be good for a starter or long relief pitcher, but a bit high for a closer. Let's wait a couple of months and see...

Yes it's early, but that was not a pretty lose. At this point, Santos is not the closer we expected, but hopefully that changes really soon.

I was quite moved by the tribute to the Alberta teens at the beginning. It makes you remember how bad things could be.

Ugliest way to lose and to Boston of all teams.
You got that right. I would much rather have lost to Cleveland and then have a big bounce back against Boston.
