I know this maybe a non story to some but NBA commissioner David Stern will announce late Thursday that he is retiring on Feb. 1, 2014

He'll be sorely missed. What I admired about him the most is that when he was obliged to discipline a player, he was swift and severe and impartial, but never unjust. Regardless of a player's stature or past history, the punishment fit the crime.

It's long been rumored that Michael Jordan was suspended for a year and a half for gambling indiscretions, but the Commissioner allowed him to keep his reputation by saying he was retiring to play baseball. If that's true, quite possibly they might have met alone, in which case Stern would have been both the prosecutor and the defender.

Why is he staying till that purticular date ? January 1960 to November 1989 Pete Rozelle ... He will have surpassed Pete by 2 months when Stern retires.

He took the job on February 1st, 1984, so he's retiring on his 30th anniversary. Also, the All-Star game will be played shortly thereafter, so it will be one huge David Stern party...

For what it's worth, I think David Stern is the greatest sports commissioner in history (Garry Bettman is the worst, but I digress)..

People often forget just how much of a fringe sport basketball really was until Stern took over.... He has a tough job in marketing almost exclusively black athletes to white consumers.... He's done a masterful job... He will be sorely missed...

I agree with this, Bettman is the worst sports commissioner ever, and David Stern is probably the best. I hope Adam Silver continues his legacy.

Yeah the NBA has done very well to expand itself into a global brand under Stern.

He's geeky but clearly he knows what he is doing.

Mind you guys like Bird, Magic, Jordan, Shaq, Kobe, Yao, Dirk, Lebron have really helped as well. OBviously there are other greats as well those are just ones that spring to mind.
