What a pathetic pitching staff. Only Washington is worse in the NL. So much for winning a pile of games at home and playing .500 on the road. Phillies have a very odd record home v. away. At 23-9 on the road, Philly could reverse the outcome when they head to Toronto next week.
Jamie and Darren were commenting on this during the broadcast yesterday as well. So odd that they have only won 2 series at home the Phillies have.

Not that it was particularly well played but it was damn entertaining. Especially with the good guys winning.

You have to admit that Cito is not afraid to show faith in his players the way he trotted BJ out there to start the 9th. Moves like this could potentially pay dividends later on by boosting a player's confidence. Granted, it's also a way to blow games here and now, but this one worked out.

Jays must have no options on Fabio Castro at Las Vegas because they never give him a call to see if he can do anything at MLB level when they call up new starters even though he has the best overall numbers of starters at AA or AAA. If they have no options on him they have to expose him to waivers if they want to return him to minors.

The Jays called up Brad Mills and Brett Cecil even though their minor league numbers aren't as good. And the 3rd option was David Purcey who still walks way too many batters in Vegas. Jays have been shopping Purcey around in trade talk; but, can't find anyone interested.

It is not confidence that BJ needs, it is a mean ass 95 MPH fastball that zig zags.
He never ever had that. In his prime he topped out at about 90 MPH.

He's lost his location but one should never underestimate the importance of confidence to a professional athlete.

If you look at Castro's stats, you'll see that he pitched June 16, which would have made him unavailable for todays start . I wouldn't be surprised if he's called up to take Halladay's spot this weekend.

Brett Cecil has already been called up to replace Roy Halladay for Saturday start against Washington Nationals.
So, Janssen, Halladay, and Downs have been replaced by Mills, Cecil and Accardo.

Yeah, that would make sense. Castro would have been pitching on three days rest.

Both Mills and Cecil were higher up on the depth chart to start the year, so I suppose that's why they get the nod over Castro. I'm not too sure about Robert Ray, though.

Too bad the Jays couldnt pull it out tonight but in fairness maybe the right team won because the Nationals should have scored in the bot of the 7th inning. Guzman should have scored on the Nick Johnson double, not sure what he was doing he seemed to hesistate there for a while going from 1st to 2nd but the ball was hit deep enough that he should have made it home. Fantastic job though by Camp and Acardo I thought. Camp got out of a bases loaded w/ 1 out situation and he fell behind 3-0 to Bard before coming back to strike him out. Acardo pitched very well considering it was his first performance back. Jays had chances to take the lead in the top 8th but were not able to cash in. Gotta love Scutaro's heady running on the basepaths, he has been making some smart plays running the basepaths as of late. Fraser just lost his control there in the 11th and that was the ball game unfortunately.

gotta love that Marco Scuttaro 2 days in a roll and he has catch the opponents napping and has been able to take second on the play...
I made the same comment on the Scutaro thread and I totally agree with you. Scutaro has made a couple of heady plays on the basepaths in the past couple games. Tonight it was Adam Dunn that he caught napping and stretched a single into a double. Jays were not able to cash in though in that inning.

Dunn made up for it in the 11th though with the GW base knock.

Slightly off-topic with regards to tonights Jays game. Did anyone notice those two fake umpires sitting in the first row of seats right behind home plate:p . Those two guys were funny. They had official umpire masks and everything and were actually calling balls and strikes along with the real umpires--lol.

I wouldn't have liked to have had the misfortune of sitting in the seats directly behind these two characters. Even Darrin Fletcher was perturbed with these two guys.

Tough loss tonight for the Jays!

i did notice those guys and actually I noticed two fake umpires sitting in the front row of another recent Blue Jays game as well, not just tonight but there was another game recently where I saw a couple guys in the front row dressed as umpires. Dont remember which game it was but I do remember that I saw this before this season.

There was a heckler in Philly sitting in the front row wearing a Phillies jersey that was pretty eccentric as well.

How about Darren Fletcher talking about UFOs and conspiracies when they were discussing the Las Vegas 51's or something.

These two fake umpires (pretty big guys to begin with) dressed up in all their gear took up a lot of space. There was a 12 year old kid sitting behind them who couldn't see the ballgame because of the massive bodies of these two fake umpires in full umpire gear.:(

Be interesting to see how Brett Cecil fares against Reds today.
Interesting article on Jays website about what he learned after getting annihilated in Boston back in May.

------
Quote:
"Cecil, 22, said that he received an eye-opening dose of Major League education in his May 20 outing on the road against the Red Sox. Boston's lineup pounded Cecil for eight runs on 11 hits, including five home runs, in just 4 2/3 innings. In the fifth inning alone, Cecil surrendered four long balls in a subpar showing at Fenway Park.

After that performance, Cecil had a conversation with Boston pitcher Brad Penny that stuck with him after he was optioned back to Las Vegas on May 22.

"He said, 'You were doing well up until now, right?'" Cecil recalled. "I said, 'Yeah, I was holding my own -- doing pretty good.' He was like, 'Yeah, man. Us pitchers, sometimes we get too confident in one pitch and try to use it too much. Stuff like that happens, and you can't worry about it.'"

Cecil said that Penny was right in his assessment. Cecil had been relying too much on his sinker and avoiding pitching inside as often as he should have been. Prior to his start in Boston, Cecil had survived with that approach in his first three Major League outings, posting a 1.80 ERA and picking up two wins.

In a way, the poor showing in Boston helped Cecil learn a valuable lesson. "

His overall line over previous 5 starts is alright for a rookie except for how Red Sox destroyed him.
Jays need him to come around because the team is in a deep hole when #5 starter shows up for work as things stand.

Doc Halladay wasn't so hot during his first tour of duty and he turned out ok. Actually, Sandy Koufax took a couple of years to mature as a pitcher as well.

Re: Blue Jays/Phillies June 28 2009

That one bad inning by Tallet really hurt the Jays today. Other than that I thought the Blue Jays came up with some nice defensive plays later in the game to keep the JAys within one run. Great play by V.Dub and a nice play by Chavez to throw out Ruiz at 3rd. And Batista made a nice play throwing out Stairs who was trying to stretch a single into a double. Rolen also started a DP in the 9th. Its too bad the Jays were not able to capitalize on the Bruntlett error in the 8th b/c that was a double play ball. Nice relief pitching by the PHillies though by Park, Madsen and Lidge.

Bad mistake by Johnny Mac though in the 9th. Phillies seemed to know he was gonna try to steal 3rd and they got him caught in a rundown.

Pretty bad when you load the bases with no one out in 2 consecutive innings (3rd and 4th). Bet that doesn't happen too often. Tallet has the occasional bad game but mostly has been good.

Ruined what would have been a good day for Hill with 2 home runs.

Could have got back into it in the 9th with a sacrifice to pitcher to move the runners on, with a sacrifice to follow. Instead Hill pops up, presumably going for a base hit? Maybe the consequence of that was an instruction to steal 3rd base?

Very true, Hill should have gone for a sac-bunt in that situation. Johnny Mac's base running gaff was a killer too.
