Part of the "Montreal System", for as long as I remember, has been to find the best players to excel in certain roles (of course easier said than done) and any goals were a bonus.
Gainey's role was to shut down the other team's offense. He rarely if ever played on the power play.
Ferguson's role was to protect Jean Beliveau.

Just for being a shut down player shouldn’t warrant an award being invented for him to win and induction into the HOF.

Leaf fans shouldn't feel so bad Carey price is doing to the Jets what he did to the Leafs. Only except Leafs mustered 3 wins against the Habs. The jets yet to win a game.
Well, well, well - now isn't that interesting. No one (including myself in my wildest imagination as a Hab's fan) predicted this - but I have to say I am really enjoying the Hab's playoff run.
The fact that the much vaunted Maple Leaf's are looking on in stunned disbelief after yet another lost season makes the Hab's success that much sweeter and beyond Priceless.
Can't say if this is due to the much maligned and snickered at (on this board) Montreal "system" but really who cares - playoff success is the only thing that matters right now.
Obviously it is not over, and weird things can happen, but the large lady is very much warming up her vocal chords off in the wings.

The "Montreal System" hasn't changed since the 1970's and maybe earlier. It is strength down the middle. Forwards who play a 200 foot game. Role players who excel at their role. The 1976-77 team might be the best ever (9 HOFers).

Agree with you. I remember 1986 (although i was a pre-teen) and 1993 when good balanced team lead by a stellar goalie went all the way.
But a lot of work ahead. Petry got hurt tonight... Just that could make a difference. One game at a time.
When Carey Price is in Lounge Lizard mode, nothing gets by him. Some may disagree, he's the best goalie the Habs have ever had.

Gary Bettman (aka The Lizard King) just started a thread discussing the evil plan to set up the Habs for a Cup win this year.
I can't reveal all of the details as I could lose my Habs decoder ring.
But basically Bettman said even though he was a little worried that a delusional paranoid person (code named Frightened Of Habs or Not Really Much Fun Or Funny at All) was on to the NHL's evil plan they had sent out the secret signal to all of the playoff teams to bow down before the truly anointed and rightful keeper of the Stanley Cup flame - Les Glorieux, Les Blue- Blanc -Rouge, Les Habitants (to you with failing hands we throw the rest of the playoff series)
So remember FFA even though you are delusional and paranoid doesn't mean that the Hab's and the NHL aren't out to fuck with your head.
P.S. Bob Gainey and Guy Carbonneau said to say hello to you and that they are truly and deeply sorry about everything they ever did to you in your imagination. Also based on your numerous posts calling into question their talent they are seriously considering giving up their HHOF membership - but they are keeping all of their Stanley Cup rings.
Bergeron is a much more elite player than the other two and is a deserving hall of gamer.
few points however. Guys like Gainey, Carbonneau, Danault, or other Selke trophy candidates are not dime a dozen players. Defensive play is a real skill and some are much more elite at it the others. I think Matthews thinks pretty highly of Danault — actually he said it post series. Leafs have defensive forwards but none to his ability.
With respect to Carbonneau. While I think he should be right on the outside borderline margins of the hall, I don’t think he should have got in . Considered and discussed.. yes but not more then that. But he was a bit of an underrated offensive player. He had offensive skills in the 1980s, but the Canadiens never used him on the power play or offensive role and had him focus on his d role in an era that many teams did not do that. Part of the reason the Habs were the best defensive team of the 80s by a fair margin was their focus on appointing players to key defensive roles. He could have been an 80 point guy if let loose a bit — that being said an 80 point guy in the 80s was much more common than today... it didn’t mean that much at the time.

I would not be surprised if Scotty Bowman said to Bob Gainey: "Your job is to shut down the other team's offense. Don't worry about scoring goals, we have Lafleur, Lemaire, Shutt, Cournoyer, etc. taking care of scoring goals."
BTW: I vaguely remember Cournoyer being a PP specialist in his first 2-3 years. Yes, he was a role player.
BTW2: The 1978-9 Canadiens have 10 members in the HOF if we include Rod Langway.
