Trying to stay in a Happy Place
My apologies in advance for the length of this post - but as the Habs are not playing (and beating) the Jets until tomorrow night I had some time on my hands.
As Fun for All is in full blown Habs as the Evil Empire mode maybe it is time to look at some of the myths and expose or explode them.

So first myth - is it true that the Hab’s had a complete monopoly or first choice of all hockey players from Quebec? – the answer is no as explored in the two articles linked below:
https://thehockeywriters.com/habs-french-canadian-rule/

https://www.nhltraderumors.me/2019/09/the-truth-behind-canadiens-first-choice.html

Except for having the first right to 2 players they played by the same rules as all other teams. Apparently none (that is right ZERO) of the players selected by the Hab's first right ever played in the NHL. The reality is that Hab’s management at the time was just better at using the same system available to all NHL teams to scout, draft and trade for talent.

Then of course there is that whole Richard Riot thing that Fun for All ignores in his list of examples of how the Hab’s control the NHL. Of course, in Fun for All’s tin foil hat world the Richard suspension was really a “false flag” and was orchestrated by the Hab’s in collusion with the NHL. The riot never really happened it was staged by paid actors, Richard actually won the scoring title but agreed not to claim it, and the whole thing was just an elaborate clever long con to divert attention from the Hab’s truly diabolical and evil plan for NHL domination.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Riot

But Fun for All missed some of the most egregious cheating by the Habs that has gone on for decades. The reason he missed them is that they are only known to the Hab’s Illuminati, and you must have the secret decoder ring to access the deep dark web sites where the proof resides.
  • The Hab’s organist and public address announcers for years have been able to exert mind control over opposing players and coaches. Those song lyrics and announcements in French are code word triggers that make opposing teams shoot wide and take stupid penalties.

  • As back-up to the system outlined above the Hab’s paid Don Cherry off to confuse his players into taking that infamous too many men on the ice penalty in the1979 Game 7 Semi Final.

  • There was a system built into the ice in the goal crease that allowed the Hab’s to move the nets. Guy Lafleur’s game tying goal in 1979 was going a foot wide but the net was moved over. If you watch the replay on super-secret slow motion you can clearly see the net move. The same system was used in reverse to make Patrick Roy look like a good goalie in the 1986 and 1993 Stanley Cup wins when really he was a shitty goalie.

  • All of the extremely questionable trades and draft choices made by the Habs over the last several decades – well again those are just part of the Hab’s ongoing master plan to regain their rightful place on top of the NHL. They were not actually supposed to win in the playoffs this year – but when they met the Leafs in the first round they said Fuck the plan – let’s beat those guys.
So Fun for All you have pierced the Hab’s veil of deception, you alone have peeked behind the curtain and seen the Wizard (or Le Sorcier as the case may be)
Your reward will be to watch the Hab’s win the North Division.

If the Montreal Canadiens were playing the Taliban, I’d cheer for the Taliban because they are the less evil of the two.

Sorry Fun for all I personally think all your interaction are great on this forum except you BS rhetoric about the habs. I do not know what frustration you got that triggered it but it must have been bad. Problem is it's all false bull shit.

Other then that I hope Price can cary a bit more magic like Patrick Roy did in 86 and 93. We might win the cup if he does :)

There use to be the "French Canadian Rule" where they got to pick the best players out of Quebec...of the six player reps who attempted to form the first players association in 1957, only one was not traded as punishment, that player was Doug Harvey of Montreal...1966, the winning Stanley Cup goal was scored by Henri Richard who put the puck in with his glove, the refs were the first ones to leave the ice and building...they named the Frank Selke award after a former Montreal GM for "Best Defensive Forward", like as if anybody cares about that award, then they give it to Bob Gainey for the first four years because they know he isn't good enough to win any other award, and then compound that NHL gift by giving that gift to Guy Carbonneau three times...and then those awards are leveraged to give Gainey and Carbonneau HOF status...numerous suspicious calls have been made...10 overtime wins in the 1993 playoffs...pulling Steve Penney out of nowhere...

Rumour has it that Trump is hiring the Montreal Canadiens to look over the election results in Wisconsin and Michigan...no kidding!
Ah yes the draft rule that netted the Habs a total of 4 players between 1963 and before it ended in 1969. Tardif, Houle, Plasse, and the legendary Roger Belisle. Clearly this was the foundation for their great run in the 70s.

As for the other stuff — Dutch Oven would be proud.

Good article linked but I do believe the author was incorrect about some pre 1963 stuff.

This temporary advantage of 1963-1969 that really did nothing for the Habs has become a myth used by the asinine to explain away their success.

pre 1963 do believe that there was some sort of radius around cities that gave teams rights over those players but I could be wrong (I think it was somewhere between 50-100km). That radius was not for all of Quebec, but it did give Toronto and Montreal a clear advantage over their 4 American counterparts. But the amusing that Leafs bring this one of up to. I can understand a Bruins fan doing so.. but I doubt they had very many Canadian based fans in the pre Orr era.

Fun for All’s fascination with and hatred for Bob Gainey and Guy Carbonneau is amusing to me.

Did they do something to his mother or sister?

Hating a sports team to the level you do is quite unhealthy. I have fun with disliking/hating the Leafs.

The point is why were the Habs even allowed the Quebec privilege draft? Why wasn’t Toronto allowed a special deal on Ontario players?

Has anyone in the Toronto media which also makes up a large part of the Canadian hockey media given any credit yet to the Habs? I haven’t seen it yet.

It’s called negotiation. Not a conspiracy. And you were bringing it up with the the intent to show it was a big advantage until you got called out.

Do you think any of the top franchises in the major sports (Yankees, Canadiens, Leafs, Celtics) were keen to move to a draft and didn’t get compensated in some way for agreeing to a system that would hurt them?

The Leafs and Canadiens were not going to give up this benefit for nothing. I’m not going to deny the old system helped these two because people wanted to play for them. It was the same across all sports prior to the draft — the top teams consistently dominated and there was a lack of parity.

The other owners compromised on the Habs draft request because they knew it was basically a nothing burger. All the top talent for a handful of years was draft ineligible anyway as they had already been sponsored. I am sure the Leafs were compensated in some other manner to agree to sign off on the draft.

By the time any real talent became available the advantage was taken away. Fact is the Habs were the first dynasty of the draft era in the mid to late 70s and it had nothing to do with any special advantages. But it was largely due to drafting of the great Bob Gainey.. and boneheaded coaching of Don Cherry.

Fun Fact on Fun for all’s current favourite player Carey Price.

Carey Price was drafted by Bob Gainey and his first NHL coach was Guy Carbonneau.
Bob Gainey comes from my hometown.

Everyone from our hometown knows just how much of a truly rotten bastard he is, how all the time he would spend at the peak of his NHL career with minor league hockey players offering advice and patiently answering their questions - was really to hide his evil nature.

As far as his hockey talent - well when he played for the Petes we would all laugh about how he really could not skate like the wind, how he really was a wimp and not at all tough, how it was a complete fluke he was admired and respected by his NHL peers for his grit, determination and leadership, that his ranking as number 86 on the NHL's 2017 list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players ever is a travesty and was fixed by the Hab's, that it is a joke he is considered one of the best Canadien's captains, and how about that those 5 Stanley Cups (including winning the Conn Smythe in 1979)?

Well - all of those things are only because the NHL was clearly in collusion with, and under the complete control of, the forces of darkness aka the Montreal Canadiens to make them happen.

I think of Bob Gainey as a third line player who's best season was 23 goals and 47 points and career totals of 239 goals and 501 points and wonder if these are HOF numbers...I wonder if he would have made the HOF if an award hadn't made made for him to win...the 1979 Conn Smythe should have gone to Larry Robinson or Guy Lafleur.

I was actually still in Montreal when both Gainey and Carbonneau were active. They were great defensive players, much like Bergeron to-day. The Canadien philosophy has always been preventing goals is as important as scoring goals and winning games and Cups more important than individual stats.

Bergeron has been a much better player than either Gainey or Carbonneau...almost every year for Bergeron has been more productive than both those guys.

Defensive players are a dime a dozen, they become defensive players because they don't produce offensively...
