Mark Giordano grew up in a neighbourhood primarily made up of construction workers, east of Black Creek Dr and Lawrence. He learned how to chuck the knuckles at a young age. Tony Rosato was also from the same neighbourhood, I thought he was an great talent, his ex-wife destroyed him (RIP).
With my Nylander critic and doubter hats off, I’m wondering how a new WN contract would impact the team’s cap structure and competitiveness moving forward.
I took a quick look at Capfriendly and it showed that the current cap hit for all forwards stands at over 58 mils, and if I’m not mistaken that’s the highest among all teams. In theory they can fit in a new Willy contract even before the Tavares and Marner contracts run out in 2025, but major compromises on the depth will have to be made.
This current core 5, Matthews/Marner/Tavares/Nylander/Rielly have been producing to a reasonably well level over the years, but the still still hasn’t achieved anything with significance, I.e. playoff success. Two major have been the lack of forward depth and weak defence/goaltending.With a motivated Willy the offence may get a little better but his effectiveness will be neutralized playing against playoff calibre teams.
‘’This conundrum has supported my theory and criticism of the Duba/Shanahan’s blueprint from the day this core was formed, that this blueprint is flawed because of the imbalance of talent between forwards and d men. If they resign Willy and can’t trade Marner, the same problems will even get worse because they just don’t have the necessary trade chips or cap room to remedy these deficiencies.
This is a classic example of “insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”. Miracle will have to come in the form of either Woll becoming Carey Price or a rookie d man in Cale Makar clone bursts into the scene. Baring these miracles, can we really expect this year’s playoff result will be different ?

2024-2025 season the cap will go up.
The Leafs will have about $52 million in players signed. If the cap goes up to $87 million, they got $35 million to fill out the rest of the roster. If Willy wants $10, the Leafs have $25M left. Klingberg, Bertuzzi and Domi won't be back next season that's $12.6M allocated for Nylander.

lost to washington in 6. Core was mostly rookies. Washington was tops in the league.
Lost to Boston twice in game 7. Both times underdogs
Series vs Columbus was pickem. Leafs were the better team until Muzzin injury. Went max games.
Series vs Montreal. Went max games. Leafs were up 3 to 1 and Muzzin injured again didn't play game 7. Montreal made the finals so it wasn't only Leafs they beat.
Versus TB lost in 7. Leafs were up 3 to 2 with the lead in 3rd period of game 6. Kerfoot screwed up but he's gone now. TB made the finals so it wasn't only Leafs they beat.
Beat TB lost to Florida. Florida also beat juggernaught Boston and made the finals so it wasn't only Leafs they beat.
Their starter was also injured. Played a rookie goalie who was 3rd on the depth chart to start the season.
Ovi and his 800 plus goals and hard hitting style of play and Washington lost every year until they won the cup once.

The Nylander haters are silent. I will only hate Nylander if he walks away from the Leafs, next season.
