Big defensemen good, small defenseman bad is not a revelation.
The Montreal team that had a D that cross-checked their way to the finals was already a few seasons ago.
They shipped Sandin out for a reason. They also traded for Schenn and McCabe.
Otherwise they would have had zippo hitters for the playoffs on D.
Muzzin was also injured.
I suppose we'll see a story about big goalies next.
Of note Marchessault plays RW. He's 5'9" and 183 lbs and won the Conn Smythe.

Maple Leafs' Brodie May Be Odd Man Out with Treliving as GM (thehockeywriters.com)

Excerpt:

" Treliving let Brodie walk in the summer of 2020 and replaced him with Chris Tanev. There was obviously something in Brodie’s game then that resulted in Treliving not having the same trust in him that he did in the past. That was when Brodie was 29. Now, at the age of 33, does it make sense that Treliving would have more trust in Brodie"

No, but it doesn't mean that Treliving would be correct to do so.

Side note, if Treliving starts screwing up will we be calling him Tredying?

The Leafs will continue to be irrelevant for the playoff games with Keefe as head coach.
Take a look at how Vegas Golden Knights performed in the offensive zone.
They have a system of team play and not individualism by players like Matthews, Mathew Kychuk etc.
I am no longer a Leafs fan now. Cheering for the VGK from now on.

not always sure...

Curious. I don't know anything about him but most scouting organizations looked to have had him picked to go in the 3rd round.
Highest ranking was second round. FCHockey had hime ranked at #118. Treliving saw something in him.

He's only 5'10" 170 lbs.

"In a different era, Easton Cowan would have been overlooked at the NHL Draft due to his size. However, in the modern NHL, top-end skill can win out over big-bodied players. In recent years, the Toronto Maple Leafs have shown their willingness to draft and develop smaller players, and this continued with their 2023 first-round pick."

(Of course, Marchessault is only 5'9" 180 lbs. But, he plays on a big team.)

Treliving has been with the Leafs less than a month. Allowing his head scout to announce the pick was telling.
Leafs likely would have traded down but probably no takers. There were no trades in the first round.
Cowen is 18. When he's ready to play for the Leafs it'll be a different looking team. Gone will be Tavares by that time.
He has been described as having a playing style like Braydon Point. He'll have a more prominent role in London next season.
Expect a huge spike in his regular season point totals. He had an excellent playoffs this season.
I had a look at all of Vegas Golden Knights amateur draft picks. Only Hague was on the Stanley Cup winning team.
Vegas built their team through the expansion draft and through trades and free agency.
Stone and Eichel were through trades. Pietrangelo was a free agent. Signed a year after Leafs signed Tavares.

Just a kid. Not NHL-ready yet. Another year in London, maybe a few in the AHL. He models his game off Nazim Kadri.

I heard on TSN Overdrive that when Calgary gave permission to Treliving to pursue employment with the Leafs, one of the stipulations was that he couldn't take part in the draft. Was he there last night?

He was, but wasn't allowed on the draft floor until after Calgary had made their first pick at number 16.

I believe the agreement was that he had to stay off the draft floor until after Calgary's first pick, then he was able to join the table. Given that we live in such a technological world, really doesn't mean much unless they took his phone away.

I doubt Treliving saw anything so special in this kid that warranted taking him at 28. More likely he's a new GM who didn't want to drop into the job and immediately piss off the scouting staff by invalidating their recommendation. It's inconceivable that there wasn't someone better available at 28. This kid would have been available much later in the draft. Waste of a first round pick.

I agree that should have drafted another player. The first few moves my Treliving doesn't look good. The Kampf signing for term/amount is a head scratcher. Back to the the Leafs drafting Cowan they may have something. Watch his highlight reel on YouTube.
