So the mighty Oilers with their stars McDavid and Draisaitl are out.
Interesting when you look at the numbers.
Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares scored 3 goals and 9 points in 5 games against Florida.
McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman and Ekholm scored 13 goals and 26 points in 6 games against Vegas. Yet they only won one more game than the Leafs.
I'm not going to speculate on what should be done in the offseason, other than they need some more grit. They really needed someone who could respond to all the crap Florida was getting away with. I will say, Tavares and Giordano are too slow for today's NHL.
I suppose you meant Nugent-Hopkins rather than Ekholm
Regarding numbers:
Total goals Leafs 10 Florida 14 and Oilers 19 VGK 22
Top 4 Leafs combined were -7 and for Edmonton -8 (Draisaitl was -5)
Leafs PP 2 for 11 for 18.2%
Florida PP 3 for 9 for 33.3%
Oilers PP 9 for 22 for a whopping 40.9%
VGK PP 4 for 24 for 16.7%
Interestingly Boston's PP in 7 games in round 1 was 40.7%. They went 11 for 27
Leafs other than the top 4 forwards 7 goals in 5 games
Oilers other than the top 4 forwards 6 goals in 6 games.
In the regular season Oilers PP was dominant and in playoffs performed as expected.
VGK made up for the difference in their even strength play. The only way for Edmonton to go further is to improve their even strength play which means defense and goaltending. They give up way too much there. Their PP has maxed out.
Edmonton scored 9 more goals than the Leafs but they also gave up 8 more than the Leafs.
Edmonton scored 9 on the PP to 2 for the Leafs. The PP alone was a 7 goal difference.
Considering every game was close 2 more PP goals from the Leafs would have helped.
