Of Shack's list I wonder if Berrios or Espinal finish the year with them?

Berrios looked bewildered most of last year. I thought he was a great pick up when they got him but they can't have him performing like last year.

Espinal is steady but I'm sure they would upgrade given the opportunity. I'd prefer if him and Bo switched positions myself. Can't see Bo going for that though. Of course I could be wrong and Bo would just do what is ever best for the team.
Aside from him being in the All Star game..... That would suggest a lot better than "steady".

Daulton Varsho looks like a glorified Randal Grichuk to me. I hope I'm wrong about that since I never was much of a Grichuk fan.
For Varsho to be worth what we paid to get him, I need to see better than a .302 OBP.

Jays management is probably hoping for going from a middle tier ERA to top 5. Improving outfield defence by getting to balls for outs or playing hits more effectively and limiting doubles to single or triples to doubles, will help to do that. At least on paper, as compared to last seasons outfield, that should happen. Baseball is not only about hitting and scoring runs. Run prevention is just as important. Jays scored a ton of runs in their last playoff game but they still lost.

Along with other changes to the park venue, the filed dimensions will change as well:

The complete changes are as follows:

Left Field Line: 328 feet (no change)
Wall: 14 feet 4 inches (previously 10 feet)
Right Field Line: 328 feet (no change)
Wall: 12 feet 7 inches (previously 10 feet)

Left Center: 368 feet (previously 375 feet)
Wall: 11 feet 2 inches (previously 10 feet)
Right Center: 359 feet (previously 375 feet)
Wall: 14 feet 4 inches (previously 10 feet)

Left Center Power Alley: 381 feet (previously 383 feet)
Wall: 12 feet 9 inches (previously 10 feet)
Right Center Power Alley: 372 feet (previously 383 feet)
Wall: 10 feet 9 inches (previously 10 feet)
Straight Away Center Field: 400 feet (no change)
Wall: 8 feet (previously 10 feet)

Down the lines the walls will be slightly higher, left and right center along with the power alleys will be shorter with higher walls.

Look for increased home runs (shorter field) and extra base hits (higher walls).

great point

staff is comparable to last year but greatly improved defense in outfield
will make pitchers look better

investing in defense makes more sense than investing in pitchers because
pitchers get injured and have off years

outfield defense was near bottom last year we are now at the top

we also have more speed and will strike out less but with less homers

homeruns put bums in seats but are overated IMHO

You don't know what we paid to get him yet.

Dave Portnoy has a problem, Jomboy Media is killing Barstool Sports.

He's not helped by Alex Cooper getting a big deal from Spotify, Kayce Smith on maternity leave and Ria Ciuffo not getting beyond fluff content. The Office shtick is dated and his male podcasters are all charmless meatheads. At the same time Jomboy is producing the level of podcast content that Bobcat McCown would be proud to of.

Jomboy:Baseball with Chris Rose and Trevor Plouffe analyzes the Blue Jays 2023 Season.

Come September you'll be saying "Teoscar WHO"?
Ha! I just saw this.

I hope so..... but I have a feeling in my stomach where I don't really think so. This new reliever from Seattle could be throwing diamonds instead of baseballs for all I give a fuck, and still Teo and his 2021 campaign (and his 2022) makes this trade a hard sell in my eyes. They're going to miss him when they leave countless runners stranded with these guys and their 220 averages.

Holy smokes I'm being so negative lol I'm sorry.

I'm expecting Varsho's 2023 offensive number to look very similar to a Joe Carter season with the Jays. Varsho will probably benefit as much as any player from the new limitations on defensive shifts, (see link above). I'll quote this post at the end of the season, whether or not my prediction proves to be true.

Oh how I wish Teoscar was still in this lineup.

Philip
me too.

He was our best hitter last year considering he was injured.
He would have easily lead in RBIs and homers otherwise and he hit two homers
in the playoff game we lost because of bad defense

BUT

He is a liability on defense, he is a free agent after next year and we freed up some $
so it was a good trade

Trading the leagues top catching prospect in Gabriel Moreno was the bad trade we made
but the Jays view the trade as going all in to get to the big show this year

I understand all that. Personally, I would have platooned him between the outfield and DH. And we're talking like outfield 10% of the time. Hopefully surrounding him with defensive minded outfielders would've helped him step up his defensive game just enough to play out there 15% of the time or whatever the case may be.. I am scared about the amount of runners that will be left stranded by these .225 hitters

I just don't believe they needed the Seattle reliever guy. Don't get me wrong I feel like Varsho was a fabulous acquisition. I just wish they found a way to keep Hernandez at the same time. I also feel they undervalued Pearson and what he has to prove THIS YEAR. Instead of unnecessary clutter in the bullpen, they could have kept one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball.

I watch a lot of podcasts on YouTube and I'm actually surprised that there has been as much backlash about that trade as there is. I didn't realize until recently.

i think the key to the trade is what 261252 said

Teo is a free agent after this year so he is what is called a one year rental.
If we want him back we can get him as a FA and keep what we got for him

If he stops hitting, as he is injury prone, it is not our problem it is Seattles

I give up on Pearson as you must do on many promising pitchers because
throwing the ball causes more injuries than any other position
