What's the idea with closing threads to further comment (not open to further replies)? What's a discussion forum for?? Not sure I could ever get on board with the concept, which absolutely reeks of cancel culture, but I would like to hear the rationale...

Because most of us get a little heated and start making it personal at some point. If you can’t talk a little politics, without insulting other members…. Would be my guess.

Been there, seen that. Still don't see why anybody should have the right to shut down all opinion just to moderate content...

Shutting down opinion seems to be the new normal in North America.

Thought it diminished the farther you get from Texas, though. Oh well, another theory of mine shot to hell....

I assume you are referring to a specific thread in which I have no idea why it was removed but generally speaking the problem with discussion boards is you have a segment that present their opinions in rational manner for the other side to consider even if they disagree, and there is a segment that cannot counter intelligently so they revert to attacking the commenter rather than that person's argument or they keep repeating points that have already been debunked or simply make shit up. This can apply to either side of any controversial subject.
The ad hominems end up hijacking the original topic and by then what's the point in keeping the thread alive? It's like the old telephone game..... it begins with one message and soon becomes something so different that no one remembers what they were talking about in the first place.

I'm a member of two other boards and the mods on those boards are serious about maintaining civility. Stick to the issue(s) and no personal attacks or insults or name calling.

I think this is a great board and the mods allow a lot of freedom. If they feel the need to delete a thread then I presume they had valid reason to do so. If I had one suggestion is that they create a sticky about deleted threads where they can post a brief explanation as to why it disappeared. Don't allow replies, just make it a summary of threads deleted and the reason.

Removed? Last time I looked it was still there, attack rhetoric and all, so what's the point? Neither complete removal nor censoring all further comment are really legitimate without explanation of any kind. Makes no sense as it literally sidesteps any problems.

The mods do provide a reason and sometimes a warning before they lock a thread. Usually the reason is lack of civility. Here is one example.

"Locked (again) as some members (still) seem to be incapable of having a civil discussion."
