He'd do better with Marie Heinan, the lawyer who defended Jian Ghomeshi. "The suspect" is (was) a student so presumably doesn't have money. It will be interesting to see what calibre of defence counsel the court gives him.
The physical evidence against "the suspect" is beyond overwhelming so his defense will undoubtably argue diminished capacity. Some news agencies are reporting that he has Aspergers Syndrome, a severe form of Autism. The judge will undoubtably order a 30 day psychiatric evaluation.
I just hope that this incident doesn't begin a new wave of fear against people with mental illnesses. We have made so much progress in the past couple decades in mainstreaming people with mental difficulties into schools and businesses.

The court doesn't give him anything. As he will undoubtedly be held without bail, he will have no income and get legal aid. He can choose a lawyer.
As you point out, the only issue is whether he had the intent for Murder One. Some counsel will accept the challenge of arguing that issue.
I've posted twice already that the burden of winning on the insanity defence is pretty vast unless there is a history of psychiatric treatment and clear break with any form of reality at the time of the crime. Throw in that the jury / judge who doesn't convict in what is already the most notorious crime in Canadian history will be reviled. This guy has almost no chance of beating the rap.
Autism, poor impulse control and anger issues do not relate to the insanity defence which concerns psychotic snaps, delusions, etc. But they could suggest that he had no premeditation and acted on impulse.
If his anger control is so low, you would think that he had a history of criminal offences however. But clearly he did not. He was accepted into the CAF for a brief period before requesting his discharge. He was functional enough to be accepted into the Armed Forces and could surf the Internet, post in forums and rent cars. That suggests that his Autism - if this is accurate at all - is very slight and not severe.
Considering all the evidence available completely refutes your claims, I think you should take your own advice.
