Here's your problem. Toronto has numerous residential areas adjacent to the downtown core. And outside the downtown core, Toronto is an "expressway and subdivision city", like LA. Sure, if I want to go from Little Italy to Cabbagetown, I can bicycle or take TTC. How about getting from Little Italy to Newmarket? Or even Rexdale?
You NEED a car to reach any area outside the downtown (or maybe as well Midtown) core.
Simply banning cars makes life impossible for every electrician in Little Portugal to do his job and provide for his family.
It makes it impossible for any professional to attend a meeting or event in Willowdale or Whitby.
City council - and people like you - have essentially fucked most inhabitants of downtown with your lousy attitude.
Here are your problems:
You wanna go back to a time and place that no longer exists. Worse yet, is that you and other "cities are for cars, not people" anti-city folk, delusionally believe that somehow if, if only we could rid the city of cyclists, pedestrians, stop signs, traffic signals and/or otherwise rid the city of everything and anything that impedes motorized vehicles from enjoying anything but freshly paved, virgin and pristine rivers of asphalt as far as the vehicle cameras can see and beyond.
Hello, hello McMandrill, is anybody in there? There is no more land available for more roads, unless subterranean and double or triple decker roadways are yer thing. Who know, Jetson's styling, maybe?
Who the fuck is banning fuckin cars? Don't go all Karen here. I'm walking here, I'm walking here.
Vehicle drivers are fuckin up vehicle drivers' commute, plain and simple. Way too fuckin many single occupancy vehicles going to the core and clogging up the core just because. Breaking laws tens of thousands of times a day. Causing gridlock and congestion. Stopping/parking where and when not allowed to stop/park just because. Blocking intersections, just because. Knocking over, dooring, maiming, dismembering KILLING cyclists just because.
City council? City council?" WTF do you know about city council? City council has been run by right-wing, car-centric, suburban councilors for over 2 decades.
And you got it totally wrong about city council and people like me. We do fine down here in the core and surrounds. We're not addicted to having to motor to within a millimeter of our intended destination while complaining, crying and whining all along the way in addition to knocking over a pedestrian or two and dooring a bunch of cyclists all along the way.
I was speaking to the OP's predicament. An imbroglio clearly foreseen but slap-happily engaging himself in. Streetcar track work on King St. W, Strachan closed off at Liberty because of the Honda Indy. Why go there? And don't give me this shit about poor lil ole Portuguese electrician absolutely needing to be in the heart of Liberty Village on work assignment during the Honda Indy weekend.
