It's almost like there's a war on the car going on
The automobile is one of the great symbols of capitalist excess. The marxist majority of city council represents an activist/academic/woke progressive voting base that identifies as marxist /anti capitalist. They rabidly oppose automobiles.

i am sure a recent study will soon come out that it’s Montreal that has the worst road congestion in America.

Its just ridiculous.

I do not know how people handle it. Me it changed where and when i work. I have not been on south-shore in a year.. Its 40km away yet it takes me less time to go to Ottawa 175km away!

My brother has a roofing business. Ge cannot accept jobs in many areas now as just the cost of his crew stuck in traffic would make him lose money.

Why?

Why drive?

Why drive down there?

Why drive down there, to get to what.

Why drive down there, to get to what, on what day?

Why drive down there, to get to what, on what day and time of day?

Why is it, whenever I am two-wheeling it around in the Toronto core and environs are there so many, many, many cars with just 1 or if lucky 2 people inside causing traffic congestion, gridlock and mayhem?

Why do so many fuckers have to drive right to within a fuckin millimeter of their ultimate destination?
Here's your problem. Toronto has numerous residential areas adjacent to the downtown core. And outside the downtown core, Toronto is an "expressway and subdivision city", like LA. Sure, if I want to go from Little Italy to Cabbagetown, I can bicycle or take TTC. How about getting from Little Italy to Newmarket? Or even Rexdale?

You NEED a car to reach any area outside the downtown (or maybe as well Midtown) core.

Simply banning cars makes life impossible for every electrician in Little Portugal to do his job and provide for his family.

It makes it impossible for any professional to attend a meeting or event in Willowdale or Whitby.

City council - and people like you - have essentially fucked most inhabitants of downtown with your lousy attitude.

Here are your problems:

You wanna go back to a time and place that no longer exists. Worse yet, is that you and other "cities are for cars, not people" anti-city folk, delusionally believe that somehow if, if only we could rid the city of cyclists, pedestrians, stop signs, traffic signals and/or otherwise rid the city of everything and anything that impedes motorized vehicles from enjoying anything but freshly paved, virgin and pristine rivers of asphalt as far as the vehicle cameras can see and beyond.

Hello, hello McMandrill, is anybody in there? There is no more land available for more roads, unless subterranean and double or triple decker roadways are yer thing. Who know, Jetson's styling, maybe?

Who the fuck is banning fuckin cars? Don't go all Karen here. I'm walking here, I'm walking here.

Vehicle drivers are fuckin up vehicle drivers' commute, plain and simple. Way too fuckin many single occupancy vehicles going to the core and clogging up the core just because. Breaking laws tens of thousands of times a day. Causing gridlock and congestion. Stopping/parking where and when not allowed to stop/park just because. Blocking intersections, just because. Knocking over, dooring, maiming, dismembering KILLING cyclists just because.

City council? City council?" WTF do you know about city council? City council has been run by right-wing, car-centric, suburban councilors for over 2 decades.

And you got it totally wrong about city council and people like me. We do fine down here in the core and surrounds. We're not addicted to having to motor to within a millimeter of our intended destination while complaining, crying and whining all along the way in addition to knocking over a pedestrian or two and dooring a bunch of cyclists all along the way.

I was speaking to the OP's predicament. An imbroglio clearly foreseen but slap-happily engaging himself in. Streetcar track work on King St. W, Strachan closed off at Liberty because of the Honda Indy. Why go there? And don't give me this shit about poor lil ole Portuguese electrician absolutely needing to be in the heart of Liberty Village on work assignment during the Honda Indy weekend.

Not what I said. But then, you people told us that if you tore down the Gardiner, there would be no traffic delays, remember that?

Stop closing up the roads that already exist. You guys fucked up driving in and out of my neighbourhood by turning the largest, widest local side street, Palmerston Avenue into a fucking bike lane last year. How the fuck does that make sense?!

Congestion in neighbourhoods downtown is not the result of an increase in cars. The same # of people live in my neighbourhood as 3 years ago. But lots of the roads and lanes have been taken away from cars, so guys like you can bicycle to your $200k per year jobs as "pronoun advisors" to DEI consultants to city council.

You closed King from Jarvis to Bathurst. You closed King from Shaw to Dufferin. You closed Bloor for 12 fucking months to put in bike lanes. You've fucked up College by putting in bike lanes and taking away car lanes. You people have caused the gridlock.

No one drives downtown. They drive in and out of downtown neighbourhoods to go to work in the burbs. But since you and all your friends bike from your coops at Jarvis and Gerrard to your offices at King and Church, you wouldn't know, would you?!

Liberty Village is notoriously fucked. At rush hour, it takes 20 minutes to exit the subdivision from 1 of only 2 exit roads. Did any of you people think about that when your tore up King West and blocked the 5 other roads in and out of a subdivision of probably 30 or 40k people?....

No. Because they're ordinary people you don't give a fuck about, when you and your colleagues have your high level meetings to decide whether "genderqueer" is an acceptable way of expressing a person's sexual orientation in official questionnaires and and you pull your $10k paycheck for attending that meeting.

And why the fuck are they closing Lakeshore and further fucking everyone who lives downtown for entire summer weekends?!

You think maybe that Indy Honda / marathon shit should be done far away in a park in the burbs where it doesn't cause 3 hour gridlock to 100k commuters???

It's not like Toronto's a city of a half-million people that shuts down on Sundays any more.

I got an idea, let's make things easier for us all, let's keep everything within a certain radius, our schools, our doctors, our friends, family (make them move closer), at least one hospital in the area.
The car, we'll deal with that, slow you down with one or two lane traffic, annoy you with eBike food deliveries everywhere, we'll bring the experience of India to Canada. We''ll create BIKE LANES, no more 2 lanes for driving, we'll start lots of construction projects at the same time.

It's an idea, someone should implement it.

I recall 2 condos built near Don Valley Golf club and one began tilting sideways looking like the tower of Pisa and it was announced that it was built above an underground stream.
Well they must have sunk right into the quicksand then because there are no condos built near the Don Valley Golf Club. Closest highrise is at 4000 Yonge and it's an apartment building that is about 40 years old and still standing.

Did a friend of your cousin's uncle from work tell you about it? 😜

In 2023 there was 1 bicycle accident in Toronto that led to a death.

Now in 2024 with all the extra bike lanes added, there have been 6 deaths already and there are still 4 months left in the year.

I expect the more bike lanes they keep adding, the more dead cyclists we're going to have.

Is it really worth it??!!

Oh, I get it.
Less bike lanes means more danger to bikes.
That would mean less cyclists.
Hence less deaths.
You are genius.
Less cyclists means less deaths.
Who would have thunk it.

They're putting a lot of bike lanes way too close to traffic, and in unnecessary places

The death of the car, eventually no lanes.
London is already doing it, taking more money from you, cash grab and control.
They set the rules how they want it and we have no other choice that we really like.

There are 3 condo buildings on the east side of Yonge St. directly across the street from DV golf club.
The ones across the street on William Carson? That's a bit far but oki. I know them. And they haven't sunk any more than Yonge Street has.

Look don't be a smart ass, I am a senior and my memory is not the best, i may be mistaken about the location but i do recall seeing a pic of the 2 condos where one was tilted and sinking because of an underground creek.

I have no problems with bike lanes but majority of cyclists do not follow the rules of the road. I have been to Copenhagen a number of times and a large number of cyclists ride to and from their work place every day and obey all rules. Also, there are very little traffic issues mainly because at all major intersection that have traffic lights their system is, green light for buses and vehicles only,2, green light for pedestrians only and 3,green light for cyclists only and it works great.
