NHL playoff format

First, second, third from the two divisions per conference will be rank as first through sixth.

First ... team with most points in the conference
Second ... other regular season division winner

Third through Sixth ... second and third place teams in each division

Seventh ... fourth place team with the most points from one of the divisions will be Wildcard #1
Eight ... fourth place team or fifth team whichever has more points will be Wildcard #2

Playoff matchups
First vs Eighth
Second vs Seventh

Second vs Third within each division.

So looking at NHL standings this is how the first round would look.
1. Pittsburgh vs Detroit(WC 2)
2. Boston vs Toronto(WC 1)

D1 series; Tampa vs Montreal(Atlantic division . second vs third)
D2 series; New York R vs Philadelphia(Metro division . second vs third)

Just curious: If the 3rd place team in one division has more points than the 2nd place team in the other division, which team would have the higher seed, I think it would be 4th.

Strange as it may sound, if I understand the format correctly, it does not matter.
Within each division regardless of overall conference points/standing second will play third.

Second round
Pittsburgh series winner will play winner of Metro division second vs third
Toronto:D will play the Tampa vs Montreal winner.

Like I said I think this format is a joke.

and as I said , how would you do it?
First have a balanced schedule, then take the top 16 teams in the league and go 1st vs 16th, 2nd vs 15th, etc. This way the top 16 teams make the playoffs, the current form could see a team in one conference miss the playoffs despite having more points than a team in the opposite conference who makes the playoffs. You're never going to please everyone trying to come up with a playoff system. This is the way I would do it I'm sure some of you have your own ideas. Btw, I also don't like the schedule format, I'd prefer a balanced schedule so every team has a fair shot at making the playoffs. Rivalries are way overrated these days. Let's hear some other opinions.

So you are basically calling for one big 30 team division.

Boring. There is not one league that does that.

Why does the NHL have to be like all the other team sports? Why not try something new and different?

It's not new and it's not different.

Stuffy, traditional baseball dropped that concept years ago and their current format is more entertaining. More teams stay in the race for longer. In your concept the only race would be for 16th, maybe 15th as well. You may get some jockeying for position, but there are very few surprises as to who gets in the playoffs and who doesn't.

With divisions, a team may not make the playoffs unless they win the division and it may not be decided 'til the final weekend. And it can occur in several divisions all at once. It generates waaay more fan interest.

Leafs are finally back on the ice ... tonight the they are in NY to play the Islanders.
Seems like along time since I saw them play last. Over two weeks ... that is long enough.

Welcome back Maple Leaf Olympians Kulemin, van Riemsdyk and Olympic Star and top scorer of the tournament, Phil Kessel.

Go Leafs Go !

Leafs catch a couple of breaks, no Taveras tonight and I've read Price won't play on Saturday. I'll bet the leafs both games.

I do think the next two games for all teams will be unpredictable .. Kind of like exhibition games .. Heck the Sabres beat the Bruins last night

Not a good night to be wagering. I had the Leafs, Pens, Hawks and Caps. Only the Caps won and that was a close one. Oh well I'll try again on Sat. night.

That was not a good way to start the home stretch. After the last time the Leafs played an lost ot the two Big aplle teams and lost, I've always been weary of them. The Isladers are a team, for whatever reason the Leafs of late have had trouble with.
