You guys should give the passengers a break. Who among us wouldn't take the seat if we could? And 250k ain't that much for billionaires. We put up(and down) a garage for a rich asshole who paid many times that to store his vehicles- including one elevator for his cars....and one for himself. I would gladly take a ride into the Mariana Trench or a trip to the space station. Both, extremely dangerous trips, even in Piccard's bathyscaphe. And if you die in the process, we'll, you got to die of something, eventually.
Don’t get me wrong - I’m not saying don’t go. I’m saying don’t go on one that is operated by a gaming controller.

If you are investing that much into the experience, make sure you are investing in coming home afterwards as well.

The OceanGate CEO who is trapped on a 22-foot submersible on an ill-fated voyage to see the Titanic wreck once explained how he didn’t hire “50-year-old white guys” with military experience to captain his vessels because they weren’t “inspirational.”

“When I started the business, one of the things you’ll find, there are other sub-operators out there, but they typically have, uh, gentlemen who are ex-military submariners, and they — you’ll see a whole bunch of 50-year-old white guys,” Rush told Teledyne Marine in a newly resurfaced undated Zoom interview.

“I wanted our team to be younger, to be inspirational and I’m not going to inspire a 16-year-old to go pursue marine technology, but a 25-year-old, uh, you know, who’s a sub pilot or a platform operator or one of our techs can be inspirational,” he continued.
So, he did not want Robert Ballard then.....how inspirational.....

Dumb-ass...
So…Rush wants to hire younger people of colour rather than 50-yo white guys because they are more “inspirational”?

It sounds like he is trying to portray himself as some sorta woke visionary…a more likely explanation in my view is that the 50 yo white guys told Rush that his submersible was flawed and he should slow down what he was doing…whereas Rush prefers to hire younger, less experienced staff who are more malleable and do what they’re told and don’t ask questions (and probably also work for less money].

Clue might be in his name...Rush.

Whatever negative feelings I might have towards billionaires as a group, I still hope that the people in this sub can be rescued.

On the other hand, there are people who post things like this on Amazon:

Honestly.. I think right now.. its more of a "Search" mission rather than a "Search AND Rescue" mission.. if they haven't been found by now.. chances are.. the submersible had some catasrophic failure.. sprung a leak or something.. I hope I am wrong...

Not only that…it’s a shitty controller with tons of negative reviews:

Rush claims to use products such as this on his sub because it is “tested technology”: ie. it has already been developed and mass produced so it can be depended upon to be reliable rather than designing and building it himself. He also uses interior lights that he bought at a camping supply store.

It looks to me like Rush was short of money and was putting this submersible together on a shoe string budget. Perhaps he is not as wealthy as he claims to be.

Apparently they will run out of oxygen by 7:00am on Thurs…if they aren’t already dead.

Still…they should keep searching with every resource they have until there is no more realistic hope to save them.

These are some more comments about the quality of the Logitech controller.

Apparently the Logitech is a cheap, unreliable device which raises the question that if he cut corners on something as basic and integral to the sub as this then what other corners did he cut?

Great point.
He apparently fired some guy who warned them of some kind of security risk, post somewhere above. If it's true, then "more to come".

I would not. I am a scuba diver, and wrecks does not interest me one bit. I positively avoid wreck dives.

And I am drawn to experiences that show an accomplishment, i.e. requires some growth or skills. Being a passenger on a rocket to space or in a submarine going down to 4,000 m are not it.

Showing off wealth is not an attractive trait.
You're telling me, if offered, you'd turn down a trip to the space station? I don't believe you.

So by your standards the Chilean miners got a free thrill of a life time and the Thai soccer team should have paid for the experience. As previously stated in this thread, I would pay $250000 not to go.
Where did I say that?

Even if they find it right now , how long will it take for them to devise a plan on how to pull the thing out? days probably. Especially if it’s stuck deep down.

Good ol Rush, couldn't afford to attach a homing device to the submersible either. It would have floated to the surface and sent a very clear signal to rescue crews. It would have cut down the search area from bigger than Connecticut to smaller than Rexdale.

These are very rich people that asphyxiated in the dark. By the time family members are done with Rush, he wont have a pot to piss in...someone will have drilled a hole in it.

I like a thrill as much as the next guy but traveling 12000’ underwater is taking it to a whole other level!

What’s odd to me is they’re isn’t some redundant safety or communication system? Obviously there’s a ship that launched this submersible within a few miles of the coordinates? Every thing in a commercial aircraft, rocket, military sub has multiple backup’s in case something does go wrong.

For what this thing weighs you would think they’re would be an emergency air bag deployment or something to surface it if something did go wrong? Jesus cripes go low tech & have a Kevlar tether attached from the launching slip? Cripes a 25’ 30,000lb Kevlar crane sling you can lift with one finger!

Modern military subs have been in service 100+ years & still fail now & again with usually tragic results. Going 3 or 4 times deeper what even the best military subs go is playing with fire if you ask me. I’m sure a lot of engineering went into this but I can’t see any practical way of testing it. The people that went down previously in this & survived the voyage should be thanking their lucky stars!

Hope they make up before they run out of oxygen or that it didn’t implode, either way it would be a horrible death. My heart goes out to the families.
Emergency air bags would not inflate due to the immense pressure at 12000 feet down you'd need to overcome to fill the bags.

Yeah, and you'll get that 25 year old kid a lot cheaper too.

Somebody should call James Cameron he's got more experience successfully diving Titanic than any other human on the planet. And he has subs that are proven to work AND are certified. (Boring I know.)

Oh wait, he's a crusty old white guy....

Tax payers also pay to rescue fishermen, oil workers and pleasure craft.
Taxpyers also pay for the health care costs of smokers, obese people. The list goes on forever, we all use government services that could have been avoided, and that others pay for and don't use.
