The OceanGate CEO who is trapped on a 22-foot submersible on an ill-fated voyage to see the Titanic wreck once explained how he didn’t hire “50-year-old white guys” with military experience to captain his vessels because they weren’t “inspirational.”
“When I started the business, one of the things you’ll find, there are other sub-operators out there, but they typically have, uh, gentlemen who are ex-military submariners, and they — you’ll see a whole bunch of 50-year-old white guys,” Rush told Teledyne Marine in a newly resurfaced undated Zoom interview.
“I wanted our team to be younger, to be inspirational and I’m not going to inspire a 16-year-old to go pursue marine technology, but a 25-year-old, uh, you know, who’s a sub pilot or a platform operator or one of our techs can be inspirational,” he continued.
So…Rush wants to hire younger people of colour rather than 50-yo white guys because they are more “inspirational”?
It sounds like he is trying to portray himself as some sorta woke visionary…a more likely explanation in my view is that the 50 yo white guys told Rush that his submersible was flawed and he should slow down what he was doing…whereas Rush prefers to hire younger, less experienced staff who are more malleable and do what they’re told and don’t ask questions (and probably also work for less money].
It kinda pisses me off, actually, because Rush is one of my all time favourite bands and they in no way deserve to be associated with any of this.
Whatever negative feelings I might have towards billionaires as a group, I still hope that the people in this sub can be rescued.

Honestly.. I think right now.. its more of a "Search" mission rather than a "Search AND Rescue" mission.. if they haven't been found by now.. chances are.. the submersible had some catasrophic failure.. sprung a leak or something.. I hope I am wrong...

Rush claims to use products such as this on his sub because it is “tested technology”: ie. it has already been developed and mass produced so it can be depended upon to be reliable rather than designing and building it himself. He also uses interior lights that he bought at a camping supply store.
It looks to me like Rush was short of money and was putting this submersible together on a shoe string budget. Perhaps he is not as wealthy as he claims to be.

Still…they should keep searching with every resource they have until there is no more realistic hope to save them.

He apparently fired some guy who warned them of some kind of security risk, post somewhere above. If it's true, then "more to come".
You're telling me, if offered, you'd turn down a trip to the space station? I don't believe you.
Even if they find it right now , how long will it take for them to devise a plan on how to pull the thing out? days probably. Especially if it’s stuck deep down.
Good ol Rush, couldn't afford to attach a homing device to the submersible either. It would have floated to the surface and sent a very clear signal to rescue crews. It would have cut down the search area from bigger than Connecticut to smaller than Rexdale.
These are very rich people that asphyxiated in the dark. By the time family members are done with Rush, he wont have a pot to piss in...someone will have drilled a hole in it.
Emergency air bags would not inflate due to the immense pressure at 12000 feet down you'd need to overcome to fill the bags.

Somebody should call James Cameron he's got more experience successfully diving Titanic than any other human on the planet. And he has subs that are proven to work AND are certified. (Boring I know.)
