The Jays front office has shown dogged determination in turning around the franchise, as displayed by them breaking the bank at $3.5M on a one year deal. He is only 32 years old so the Jays must feel that his best years are still ahead, despite ERAs of 4.52 and 4.94 the last two years. Surprisingly the Angels did not tender him a contract. What were they thinking?Merry Christmas from Shatkins! Blue Jays sign Matt Shoemaker formally of the L.A. Angels. He had 7 starts last year and 14 the year before. Shoemaker has had arm problems but he may fit in to the Blue Jays rotation. Wow can't wait !
The signing of Roger Clemens put no more asses in seats, I don't think Nelson Cruz would have that effect. The small market Twins sign Nelson Cruz to a $14.3M 1 year deal plus an option.
....but for the money it would put more asses in the seats....
LOL! I was thinking the same thing when I saw the surname and read his stats.I'd have preferred Willie Shoemaker and he's dead.
Didn't they still have decent attendance when Clemens came here? Was it as low as last year? The signing of Roger Clemens put no more asses in seats, I don't think Nelson Cruz would have that effect.
You forced me to look it up and you are correct. The signing of Roger Clemens put no more asses in seats, I don't think Nelson Cruz would have that effect.
Should I start planning the parade route??Merry Christmas from Shatkins! Blue Jays sign Matt Shoemaker formally of the L.A. Angels. He had 7 starts last year and 14 the year before. Shoemaker has had arm problems but he may fit in to the Blue Jays rotation. Wow can't wait !
Jays were averaging 30K, that leaves ~20K unsold seats for Roger's skills to fill (narrator: "he didn't fill them). You forced me to look it up and you are correct.
2 possible factors:
1)the Jays were still averaging over 30,000 per game, so there was less room for improvement than they are facing this year
2)it is quite possible that the attendance was better on the days that he pitched
I just wish that they'd throw us a bone or two. If Minnesota can spend some money, there is no reason we can't.
If you get all these girls of yours to be in the parade, it wouldn't matter how the Jays do.Should I start planning the parade route??
My point, not I clearly stated it, is that spending some money and acquiring some decent players should translate into more wins. I agree that an individual player unto himself may not make a big difference but a team that can win 80 to 85 games and stay within shouting distance of a wild card spot into August will, or at least should, attract more fans than a 70 win team.Jays were averaging 30K, that leaves ~20K unsold seats for Roger's skills to fill (narrator: "he didn't fill them).
Attendance was not affected by individual signings, or who was starting on particular days.
Doc didn't put an extra 5K in the stands, nor did Roger.
You'd have to go back to FernandoMania or The Bird to find pitchers that drew exceptional crowds for their starts.
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard and cash considerations from the San Diego Padres on Sunday in exchange for Canadian outfielder Connor Panas.
The 35-year-old Richard went 7-11 with a 5.33 earned-run average through 27 starts with San Diego during the 2018 season and has a record of 68-79 with a 4.46 ERA over his 10-year MLB career
Yup another cheapie that I would be surprised if he was any help at all. It sure won't put bums in the seats.Looks like the Jays signed another all-star: https://www.cp24.com/sports/toronto...m-padres-for-canadian-minor-leaguer-1.4235469
Forget the stats. You guys are missing the key to this trade. The Toronto Blue Jays acquired left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard and cash considerations from the San Diego Padres on Sunday in exchange for Canadian outfielder Connor Panas.

Agreed. Not a lot of sense spending money until 2020 at least. 2019 will be interesting to see how Vlad gets on plus a whole lot of other developing talent. You guys are just brutal and harsh, but I can appreciate and value your opinion on the team. However, you must realize that BJ have a very strong farm team and the management team were able to rebuild it fairly quickly after AA depleted the farm to build a contending team for 2015 and 2016. Nonetheless, in my opinion it was 2 great years and I wish that they had acquired Zobist for Tellez and Im almost certain that they Jays would had gone all the way with Zobist in 2015.
Again, Blue Jays have the top farm in the league and I anticipate that BJ will strongly contend and beyond in 2020 or 2021. These guys know what they are doing and frankly look at the track record from Boston Red Sox who won 3 WS under Ben Cherington by developing home grown talent and even winning the WS this year is a great example. Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Xander Bogaerts, Andrew Benintendi, Christian Vazquez, Blake Swihart, and Matt Barnes are all home grown talent for Boston.
We are very fortunate to have Ben Cherington at the helm along with Atkins and Shapiro. Your views upon the team are short sighted rather than looking ahead which is a very bright future for Toronto and we have the best prospect talent depth in MLB. It's perfectly natural to want the result now, but be patience and it will all pay off with all of the young talent coming up in the near future.
I think that timeline is somewhat optimistic. IF, they make mostly good moves and everybody develops as desired and become competitive by 2021 or 2022 that is 6-7 years for shapeero at the helm. Hardly a short timeline for a team that was very close to making the WS two years in a row.You guys are just brutal and harsh, but I can appreciate and value your opinion on the team. Maybe you should be a little more even handed in your assessment of how Boston built their team. You mentioned the home grown talent and there are some good ones. But how about the tiiiny bit of reinforcements they brought in the last several years such as, Hanley Ramirez, Rick Porcello, Craig Kimbrel, David Price, Drew Pomeranz, Chris Sale, Mitch Moreland, J.D. Martinez, Pablo Sandoval (he didn't work out but they made the effort to get him and then spent money to correct their mistake), Eduardo Nunez. TBH, the home grown talent, even with Betts, pales in comparison to their acquisitions. Without those acquisitions the Sox are battling the Orioles and the Jays in the standings if they operated like shapeero, only using their cheap homegrown talent. As was pointed out above there has to be some winning veterans in the mix as well. shapeero has acquired not one fucking single player of that type. These guys know what they are doing and frankly look at the track record from Boston Red Sox who won 3 WS under Ben Cherington by developing home grown talent and even winning the WS this year is a great example. They will spend money and get some good vets when vlad and company have a year under their belts. You have to remember, Atkins only has about two years left to make something happen, so he'll be all in year 2020.Yup another cheapie that I would be surprised if he was any help at all. One of my concerns is there appear to be a lot of very good young players in the system, Vlad jr., Bichette, Cavan B, etc. plus the youngsters that came up late last year. You need some experienced players that know how to win on the team. These kids need leadership from experienced veterans that have rings or at the very least competed for a ring. The additions to date have been, at best, disappointing.
If/when they bring Vlad jr up, who on the current Jays roster will protect him in the line up? Once veteran pitchers see the line up, he should not get anything to hit.
Shack, IMO is spot on!
Is that a certainty or a hope? In the Star today, Richard Griffin said the next few years will be miserable. That means 7 years from when they inherited a solid playoff team until they get some vets. The better part of a decade. They will spend money and get some good vets when vlad and company have a year under their belts. That would actually only make it 6 years. If by next year, the team has lot's of promise, and lot's of salary room coming up, my guess if they give him that 6 year to complete the plan. 2021 will be year 6 for him.Is that a certainty or a hope? Maybe it is just my opinion, but I find that unacceptable.
