The reason they agree to this is it usually is the best option for both parties. Tulo gets all his money and still keeps getting an opportunity to play baseball and make more money, while jays feel good about staying under the luxury tax because the contract is now back loaded clearing room for a roster spot/money under the luxury tax.

The club will come nowhere close to the luxury tax threshold in '19, or '20.

It does sound ridiculous but I don't think that it is all that uncommon. Different sports with different economics but the Leafs ate a bunch of contracts as well.

The problem is, very few superstar ballplayers want to play in Toronto. Thats just the way it is.
In fact, some even have a clause in their contract that says they do NOT ever want play (or be traded to) in Toronto.

There are other factors that hinder the possibility of luring free agents. One of the big ones is the field. Most players do not care for playing on turf. Other considerations such as crossing the border, the exchange rate, living away from friends/family also add in to the equation.

On the other hand, there are lot's of reasons to play in Toronto. Safe, clean city compared to many venues in the USA. Good place to have your family, even if it is for the summer. Never have to play a game in bad weather. Lot's of massage parlors (probably not in their brochure, at least the official one).

But one of the biggest deterrents to not being able to attract free agents is not having a team that has a chance to win it all.

Getting back to what Shack has been trying to impress, they are a big market and can afford to spend the money, but they have a shitty management team that is trying to run them like they are a small market team. That type of style is hit and miss, and usually more miss.

Toronto hasn't landed a big name free agent in decades, they got granderson 10 years past his prime. FAs will never come here in their prime, only at the end when their options are limited.

None of that has anything to do with the size of the market that Toronto has at its' disposal. That is the crux of our debate. Not whether they can get free agents or not. Phis wants to use that as proof that Toronto is not a big market. What they need to do and how to do it is a separate discussion, but Toronto has the resources to do anything they want to do.

The one and only factor that determines the size of the market is the population.
