not always sure...
they have 3 of their top players injured, maybe not top 3 in other peoples minds, but these 3 are their lifeblood. julien too good a coach to let them fade away. i think they hang around.
Five, actually. Five of their top goal scorers are on injury reserve.
They might not make it this season but they’re loaded with 27 draft picks over the next 3 years.

Hutch in net tonight. Guess Leafs will need to score 4 minimum.

Hutch looked legit. Calm and confident. They've found their backup.
Leafs last 10 games no regulation losses and 9 regulation wins.
After 43 games Boston and Leafs both have 24 wins and for those thinking of Ottawa they have 16 with 2 games in hand.
8 behind the win column. That's half their win total.
For those who think Leafs play very chaotic perhaps start watching the actual games.

At 155 goals only Colorado has scored more goals.
Their goal differential is at 20. Tied with TB and only 4 other teams with better.
Boston, TB, Toronto could very well be the class of the Atlantic division again.

Totally different Leafs tonight. They played the same style as Islanders and waited for their superior goal scoring talent to get opportunities.

The team now has the confidence and poise to switch styles from game to game and still make it work for them.

Amazing what happens when the GM and coach share similar philosophies as to how the game should be played.

Babs and Dubas were not a match. It was doomed to failure as Dubas built a team that Babcock's philosophy would bring to its' full potential.

shack, are you indicating that the Maple Leafs are in fact, not playing Babcock hockey?

15 of 16 teams that make the playoffs don't win the cup. Heavy team like Columbus didn't win the cup. Columbus also loaded up at the trade deadline.

I'm sure there are some aspects of Babcock hockey still being employed by the team/players, but sooo much is different that it is not appropriate to use that term as a generalization.

Exactomundo shack, Babs must have seen last night's game and said, "why didn't they play like that for me".

They played Babcock hockey: finishing forechecks and creating turn overs in the neutral zone. Barry Trotz tried to play the same game, its worked for him this season. However the Leafs can play it better, when motivated, superior forwards. They don't need to dump the puck in to make line changes, they're fast enough that they can control the puck while changing. You can count how many times AM cycled back for an orderly line change last night. The Islanders couldn't do that.

I don't think Babs is watching Leafs on TV anymore. He got too ashamed of himself and depressed a couple of weeks ago. He managed to turn the best talent in the NHL into a last place team.

What you don't see now is defenseman behind the net ringing it along the boards to a forward stationed on the opposition blue line who just tips it into the offensive zone. That was Bab's most favourite breakout.

The Islanders game was their best game of the season, hands down. Hardly any brain farts on the defense, all lines rolling and even the post gods on their side. It was a good effort by the whole team that didn't forget the second period and checked the middle of the ice effectively. If they can play like that, every game, they'll be a handful for any opponent.

Next up:
Edmonton who beat Boston in regulation in their last game in Boston. Hard to win in Boston and Edm did it.
Followed by WPG again which should be a much tougher game since can't expect the goalie to play that bad again and WPG did get over 40 shots.
Then Florida who is a legit playoff spot competition in the Division. Florida may be the team required to beat out for top 3.
