Maybe he did that hoping to get fired. What is his severance package?

However, he probably damaged his prospects with other teams.
The Leafs don’t need to ”fire” him. He’s a contractor and his contract expires on June 30, 2023.

There’s a lot of teams looking for new coaches and GM’s, Leafs might not get the one they want.

It's likely that he is considered an employee... with an employee contract that had a fixed end date on the contract.

Either way there is no need for a severance package, so we reach the same conclusion. He just needs to be paid out to the end of his current contract.

I think a competent employment lawyer will opine that Dubas was an employee and not an independent contractor.

I'm sure they would. Dubas is likely an employee in my view. However that is largely irrelevant here.
You do realize that an employees' employment contract can have a fixed end date right?
In Dubas case the contract was the end of June 2023, and I am sure the Leafs will pay him until then. He is not entitled to a cent after that.

So, even though Dubas was "fired" on May 19th (and relieved of his duties?), the Leafs still have to pay him until June 30th? Could Dubas sue for reputation damages? As an employee, if he was fired without cause, the usual severance is one month pay per year (9 months in Dubas' case).
Independent contractors vs. employees | Canada (osler.com)
Most employees don't have a specified term of their contract (nor specific severance terms) in their agreement, which is why common law comes in to dictate what their severance terms should be once they are terminated.

Dubas, like all GM's had a fixed contract date, which I am sure had the severance terms dictated within it.... common practice for NHL is to pay until the end of the contract.

Its not unlike most executives -- most have specific severance terms in their agreement, and a number have fixed end dates of the current contract as well, which are then renegotiated at the end of the term.

- he and Dubas‘ agent had reached some kind of agreement on what the numbers were going to be, X amount if the Leafs should lose to the Panthers and Y amount should the Leafs advance further; the Y amount would be substantially higher;
So another team was negotiating with the Keefe camp while he was under contract to the Leafs? Isn't that improper?

I nominate Dale Tallon for GM. Great success in Chicago and Florida.

not always sure...

It's tampering and it's taken very seriously, but he's speculating and assumptions are as helpful as termites.

I keep thinking about the irony of that though, that a guy we've hired and entrusted to negotiate all of our contracts chooses to pay an agent to negotiate his own contract.

Presumably you’re referring to Dubas and not Keefe. Yes that would be tampering but it would be hard to prove if done verbally. I wouldn’t doubt that it happens all the time with pending free agents. Maybe another club’s president was just having a cup of coffee with his agent, not formally making an offer, but just expressing their kean interest in Dubas. Btw, it’s been reported that Pittsburg has asked for permission to negotiate with Dubas.
