But you asked why his +/- was only +1 (it is now even after last night's game) and the easy answer is he is not a good defender and doesn't generate enough offense even strength to compensate.
He has 13 PP goals tied with Matthews for the lead and 18 PP assists 1 more than Nylander.
Hence PP is where he's most effective and PP doesn't count for +/-

I think he's having a very good year. He is a consummate pro. He works hard every game and every shift.

He does the dirty work in the corners and in front of the net. What metric measures battles in front of the net to get in position for tips and screens? What metric measures winning battles in the corners? He's got a bit of nastiness as well. Matthews, Marner and especially Nylander have learned a lot from him as far as working hard at both ends of the ice. What metric measures that? He's the least flashy but he is clearly the captain. The other players respect him greatly.

There's a lot of intangibles that he brings.

Leafs were due for a Shootout win. Kerfoot scores the SO winner but it would be something else if Bobby McMann scored the winner. One of the NHL GMs suggested no icing and no offsides for 3 on 3 OT expanded to 7 mins to reduce the number of shootouts, someone will score more often in 3on3 OT. Basically, end-to-end pond hockey in OT, I love it.

Seeing as goalies are considered part of the team, even though the Sens skaters held a big territorial advantage, the Leafs goaltending made up for that and more so. As such the total Leafs team, including the goalies, outplayed the Sens. The Sens skaters outplayed the Leafs skaters.

So Matt Murray allowed 4 goals in 6 straight games now, that's Grant Fuhr numbers on a very good Leafs team.

Which is why in my original post after the game I credited Murray with holding the fort.

Without his stellar play they don't win that game.

FFA seems to think the Sens were lucky to get a point....

If you're a Leaf fan I don't know how you can be happy with that game....They were beaten in every facet except one.

That won't hold up in the playoffs against teams superior to Ottawa.

I find it hard to believe that there’d be the day that I would defend Nylander, but, to my observation, he hasn‘t been as bad as in years past as far as efforts go. He’s been actually one of the more consistent Leafs this season. He hasn’t got the numbers the last three games and maybe Keefe is seeing something that warrants calling him out for. I actually respect a coach for doing that on a core player, but I just wish he had the same balls to call out Reilly who basically sucked all year until the last two games. My guess is that Nylander is not part of the gang (Marner/Matthews/Tavares/Reilly) ?

Nylander's points this year are a red herring. Yes, his overall game is better/more consistent this season. He has indeed set up/scored a small handful of really nice goals. But he's the master at piling up meaningless points in meaningless games, which is how we got to this false impression his game has gone to the next level just in time for the playoffs. I still see him only weakly stick checking opponents, going on lone rushes where he rags the puck uselessly then gives up the puck without creating a scoring chance, going for a long skate or immediately coasting off to the bench when he does give up the puck instead of stopping and going right back after it. Now it feels like he's pissed that he's again moving down the depth chart, playing with weaker players instead of the team's stars. Won't be surprised if he once again essentially disappears as a consistently effective player against much tougher teams in the first round.

well said mr wick. at least someone on this thread sees it the way i do. bill nylander, cant effin stand him. lazy, soft as shite. he could be a REALLY good player, but does not want it, IMHO.
