The first round pick wasn't for Laughton but for his salary and cap hit retention. Same with Brandon Carlo and Jake McCabe.
I could be wrong, but it says in this article that the Scott Laughton trade included the Leafs 2027 1st round draft pick??

March 07, 2025

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has acquired forward Scott Laughton, a fourth-round selection in 2025 NHL Draft and a sixth-round selection in the 2027 NHL Draft from Philadelphia in exchange for Toronto’s first-round selection in the 2027 NHL Draft and forward Nikita Grebenkin. The Flyers are retaining 50% of Laughton’s salary.
Laughton, 30, has recorded 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists) in 60 games with the Philadelphia Flyers this season. In 661 career NHL games, The Oakville, ON native has registered 265 points (106 goals, 159 assists) and 386 penalty minutes while adding 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 24 playoff games.
Laughton was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round (20th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.

Here's the Brandon Carlo deal.

March 07, 2025

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has acquired defenceman Brandon Carlo from Boston in exchange for Toronto’s first-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft (top 5 protected), Philadelphia’s fourth-round selection in 2025 and forward Fraser Minten. The Bruins are retaining 15% of Carlo’s salary.
Carlo, 28, has skated in 63 games for Boston this season, registering nine points (one goal, eight assists) and 24 penalty minutes. In 617 career NHL games, the 6’5, 220-pound defenceman has recorded 109 points (29 goals, 80 assists) and 331 penalty minutes while adding 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 72 playoff games.
The Colorado Spring, CO native was originally drafted by the Boston Bruins in the second round (37th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft.

In the Brandon Carlo trade, "top-5 protected" means that the 2026 first-round pick the Maple Leafs sent to the Bruins will only be given to Boston if it falls outside the top five picks in that year's NHL draft.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • Protected Draft Pick:
When a draft pick is "protected", it means that if the pick falls within a certain range (in this case, the top 5), the team that traded the pick (the Maple Leafs) retains the pick and it is not sent to the receiving team (the Bruins).
  • Top-5 Protection:
In this specific scenario, the 2026 first-round pick is "top-5 protected," meaning that if the pick is within the top 5, the Maple Leafs keep it. If the pick falls outside of the top 5, it will be sent to the Bruins.
  • Trade Details:
As part of the trade, the Maple Leafs sent a 2026 first-round pick (top-5 protected), a 2025 fourth-round pick, and forward Fraser Minten to the Bruins in exchange for defenceman Brandon Carlo.

As I stated the first round pick is compensation for salary retention. How else do you think they were able to fit both players contracts under their tight cap. It was the same when Dubas acquired McCabe and Lafferty a couple of seasons ago at the deadline.

Will Rogers eat the loss if Vlady is not resigned? There's only a %30 chance will the unknown will work out. If the Jays let him walk they lose all credibility.

Vlady working hard while Teoscar busts his balls.

Berube's play style is dump and chase, less risk and turnovers going back for odd man rushes.
Under this system Leafs are the 8th highest scoring team in the league on a per game basis
They're ahead of teams like Oilers and Panthers. All teams, aside from Columbus, in this grouping are sure fire playoff calibre teams.

They supposedly now have the best D grouping, goalie tandem, and bottom 6 depth forwards they've ever had under the Matthews era. Treliving went all in by trading 2 first round picks and 2 prospects. They don't have a 1st round pick for the next 3 drafts. They were probably willing to give up even more for Brayden Schenn.

Under this system Leafs are still the 6th highest scoring team in the league on a per game basis although it may not appear that way. They're ahead of teams like Oilers and Panthers. All top 8 are playoff calibre teams.

Actually they're 10th, you missed Columbus, Winnipeg, and Vegas.
Also, goal differential may be even more important, they're lagging significantly behind the major contenders.

Bingo. It makes no sense whatsoever from an economic or public relations point of view. They want to raise prices but then not spend the money on their homegrown superstar? How far will that fly with fans.

Vlady working hard while Teoscar busts his balls.

I hope mitch sees how fat Vladdy is getting. Look at those biceps and he's not even flexing them.

edit: Wait! This is a Leafs thread. You suckered me in.

I totally admit, I don't understand all this "salary cap" stuff. What I do know is that the Leafs are trading away a lot their first round draft choices!!

To my point about the Leaf organization.
Maple Leafs fans outraged after season-ticket prices raised | Toronto Sun

This organization is strictly a corporate, old boys country club, watching a game at Scotia is my worst experience of watching any sporting event.
They rape you at the gate, they rape you at the concessions, half empty platinums at the beginning of periods.
Even Ottawa has a better atmosphere.
It's soulless and heartless, and that's permeated down to the team on the ice.
If I was a pro, Toronto would be way down on the list of teams I would want to play for.

Vladdy is not a superstar. Vladdy is nowhere close to players such as Judge and Ohtani etc
