According to capfriendly the Leafs are still $2M over the cap.

I'd imagine they will wait through training camp to see if anybody else gets injured and goes on LTIR. I think you can practically put up to 3 on LTIR before it becomes an issue in terms of being able to dress 20 players, as LTIR players count against the active roster max of 23 (I stand to be corrected on this last point)

Calle Jarnkrok seems like a candidate to be moved otherwise (2.1 million)

The Leafs "LTIR" assessment for Murray was mutually beneficial for both parties. Murray will just grin and go along with this "assessment" as I am sure the Leafs threatened Murray and his agent with a buyout.

If the Leafs had bought out Murray they would have had to absorb a cap hit of about $0.8m this year -- and being this tight against the cap, they did not want to do this.

Matt Murray is owed $8.0 million this year as his 4 year contract was backloaded. By avoiding the buyout, he avoids losing $2.7M of cash. So he accepts the LTIR plan as well.

Let's be honest here - Murray may have liked the opportunity to prove himself again this year. But it would have likely failed, and it is highly uncertain whether he will ever get NHL contracts totaling $2.7 million again.

Karlsson to Pens completed. Lots of other so-so contracts moved in a 3 way deal with Montreal and San Jose to get it completed (Jeff Petry, Mike .Hoffman, Mikael Granlund).

Sharks get a top 10 protected 1st from Pens and only retain 15% of Karlsson's contract.
Montreal essentially gets a second round pick for picking up about $2m of contracts.
Pens get the best player in the deal and get rid of middling contracts which allow them to only have to take 15% of Karlsson. Have to worry about 2026 and 2027 however.

Probably a good move for all team. If Pens are intent on winning now this is about the best they can do. But it's likely going to be some rebuild times there within a few years with nothing young to start with,.

I'm surprised the Pens gave up so little of value to get him.
They did get hit with a $10 million a year salary for the next 4 years. As impressive of a season Karllson had last year offensively, he is 33 and is not getting younger. I do not think he will come close to the numbers he did last season for the rest of his career.

The pens are an aging team (read a site where they are the oldest on average) and will have to re-sign or replace Crosby and Malkin, who are not the players they once were.

If all goes according to script, I imagine Dubas will sign them to high paid contracts and hand cuff the franchise from getting over the hump like he did to the Leafs.

To me, this was a bad deal for Pittsburgh.

Dubas won't do anything the owners won't let him do.

Aren't Mario (and Sid?) part of the ownership?
The Fenway Sports Group purchased a controlling share in the Penguins about a year or two ago. Mario remains involved, but is not majority owner.

Yes, but Marner totally disappeared in round 2 against Florida. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Marner has always been a poor playoff performer in previous yrs, with the Leafs!!
The playoffs are about simplifying your game since time and space are non existent and you need to forget the highlight reel plays.

Marner has a difficult time adjusting his style of play and too often turned the puck over in the playoffs trying the fancy play.

Watching the final 4 in the playoffs the teams play a simpler game. Come through the neutral zone, if no plays are avaialble dump it in and get a forecheck going. The Leafs, and players like Marner, love the possession game and don't adjust to dump and chase when required. Hence the puck is turned over and the play is coming back at us, putting more pressure on our overmatched D core.

And Nylander.....only turns it on when he manages to find open ice, which is rare in the playoffs. The rest of the game he is a passenger doing high speed fly-bys

It seems to me a serious cup contender has a balance of a few factors such as skill, grit, work ethic, solid D, solid goaltending. If you have too much of one at the sacrifice of other elements it is difficult to be serious contender. The Leafs : excess in the skill department, lacking in the grit and solid D. Solution : use your excess to address your weaknesses, balance out your team and increase your ability to be a serious contender.

Think about what could be done with Nylander's upcoming cap hit, how that money could be better spent to produce a team that is more playoff ready.

Just my 2 cents from a beer leaguer/ arm chair observer.

Thanks. Never really noticed these nuanced aspects of Slick Willy's game before.

In the Montreal series, the Habs kept hitting Marner and put Danault on Matthews and that neutralized the Leaf offense.

‘Hitting is a category in the analytic department that I find very misleading. A Marner or Rielly hit vs a Schenn or Trouba hit represents different impact on the extreme ends. No one on the other team is weary much of a big hit when Marner or Rielly (used as an examples here) is on the ice, but you bet that they make sure to keep their heads up when big hitters like Trouba or Schenn is there.

The hardest hit that Matthews took was from Trouba when he was with the Jets and you bet that he would make sure that it won’t happen again when playing against Trouba. The two recent Leafs that other teams watch out for were Muzzin and Schenn and they’re both gone. Reeves may be the hardest hitter on the Leafs barring other changes.

‘’The current Leaf defence is one of the softest and defensively weakest among legit contenders and I hope and expect Treliving to add more size and grit before the season starts.

He's retired now but when he was captain he would staple anyone to the boards if he (the opposing player) messes with one of his players. Plus, a very good D-man as well.

To whom are you referring? There is no D-man captain mentioned on this page.
