I’m not sure if this has been asked but does anyone here understand the rational in keeping Keefe?
He's an excellent regular season coach so keep him until March then bring in coach Q for the playoffs.

I believe this is the last year the Leafs can use Muzzins as cap relief.
I see a new NHL trophy being created. Most valuable cap relief provided by an injured player in a season. It could be sponsered by those law firms that specialize in disabilty claims.

After the first few days of free agency Vegas oddsmakers have Colorado as the cup favourites for the upcoming season, followed by Carolina, Edmonton, New Jersey then the Leafs.

dude's on his last year, if they hate him, you gas him, lots options out there:

-patrick roy
-coach Q
-AV
-Bruce
Gallant
On that list I’d go Patrick Roy…but…he’s a nut, he’s had problems with management before…I don’t like the other guys because they are recycled retreads, they’ve coached 4-5 teams already.

Negotiations not going well with Nylander. Might have to trade him or let him walk. Domi and Bertuzzi on 1-year deals might resign with the Leafs if Nylander walks next season. Leafs could have two good players at $4M each, while Nylander is looking for $10M.

Nylander is not worth $10m. Based on comparables I place him at around 8.75 million, maybe $9 million since the cap will be a bit higher to start the 24/25 season.

Leafs can't keep giving darling contracts to its core like Dubas did.

Looking at recent contracts for comparable wingers:
Zibanejad who has actually been better than Nylander each of the last 5 years signed at 8.5 in summer of 2021.
Kirill Kaprizov, who is better than Nylander, got 9.0 million in summer of 2022 coming of a 108 point season.
Timo Meier, who is pretty comparable to nylander (perhaps a bit less value), just signed for $8m. He has had back to back 40 goal seasons.
Johnny Gaudreau who had a monstrous year at age 28, could only get 9.5 million on the free market.
Tkachuk got 9.5 million coming off a 100 point season last summer.

if I'm Nylander's agent 40 pts in 50 career playoff games the best of the core 4 in the playoffs, that's what they are selling to Treliving.

It's a shame that the only one of the core 4 that shows up for the playoffs is the one they are likely to move. But that's this team for you. Everything done ass backwards.

The leafs will end up making the playoff no-show the highest paid in the league. I believe it was Jeremy Roenick who once said, when talking about how Russian players performed in the playoffs in the 90's, "when the paycheques stop, so do they".

Now the same could be said for #34 and #16. No fuckin heart.

But anyway, it seems like we are just beating a dead horse here with regards to this team and the playoffs.

So far I'm pretty impressed with Treliving's signings. Especially given our cap issues.
Regarding the Nylander situation there is no way I'd be extending him if his camp his asking anywhere close to $10M per season.
He doesn't have the competitive drive, win at all costs attitude, that the team needs.

Treliving needs to consider the cap. I'd put him in the $8-9 Mil range. If he wants more, he can seek it elsewhere. Although, he may find that his list of 10 teams also have cap issues and will be unable to pay him 10 Mil. So in the end, he may just end up on another team for what the Leafs were offering.

After this season the cap will go to $88 million and then over $90 million the year after so Nylander and Matthews are looking at the bigger picture, once the cap hits $90 million there will be a lot more players signing for $10 million or more.

Can the Leafs afford to extend Nylander even at what seems to be a “reasonable “ number, say 9m ? I don’t think so unless you are prepared to scrap any realistic chance of being a serious cup contender for the next two seasons until Tavares contract runs out.

So far Treliving essentially substituted Schenn, O’Rielly, Bunting with Klienberg, Bertuzzi and Domi and imo that weakens the defence. Schenn and Reilly was their best pairing and O’Rielly was their best two way player. They’re currently over the cap and still have to either resign Samsonov or a replacement. Where and how are they going to come up with the cap space to do that ?

‘Does any one honestly believe that this current defence/goaltending combo is good enough to challenge? They don’t have the cap space to sign any free agents and the only chip they have to get a top pairing d man , both in trade value and cap room is Nylander because they can’t move Marner now.
