I think people kept pointing out during the playoffs that no team has ever won the cup who had at least one player being paid over $10 million.
I think the Leafs could have won more playoff games or even the cup with $10m players - if they actually performed better in the playoffs.

However getting a total of 113 points in 131 games from those 3 players, the equivalent of a 70 point season has been the issue

Pastrnak just signed an 8 year 11.25 Mil contract. Wouldn't it be nice if Matthews did the same? Does he really think he's worth more than that?

Last Year

Pastrnak 82 Games 61G 52A 113Pts - Playoffs 5 Games 5G 5Pts

Matthews 74 Games 40G 452A 85Pts - Playoffs 11 Games 5G 6A 11Pts

Out of curiosity, in what year was the 1st $10M contract awarded and how many teams have had such players? What kind of sample size are we talking about?

They didn't go into that much detail.

It's a shame that the only one of the core 4 that shows up for the playoffs is the one they are likely to move. But that's this team for you. Everything done ass backwards.

The leafs will end up making the playoff no-show the highest paid in the league. I believe it was Jeremy Roenick who once said, when talking about how Russian players performed in the playoffs in the 90's, "when the paycheques stop, so do they".

Now the same could be said for #34 and #16. No fuckin heart.

But anyway, it seems like we are just beating a dead horse here with regards to this team and the playoffs.
The core 4 better start punching back and give a few face washes with the glove after the whistle scrums in the playoffs. They got manhandled by Florida in round 2. You would think guys like Reaves, Bertuzzi, and Domi would teach them to do it. Let's hope so.

Thanks for the research.

So that's maybe 1/3 of the teams have had players over 10 million dollars in a 7 year period. 1 has won. So statistically, it's about what one would expect.

Unfortunately, its not in their nature to fight back or even give a face wash. The closest they come is when #34 does that uncomfortable laugh thing when he's being pushed around and tries to make it look like he's not afraid. Meanwhile, his hockey pants are filled to the brim. I remember when they played Montreal in the playoffs in game one of round one a couple of years ago. Forgot who it was from the habs who was giving him shots behind the net after a scrum and he was trying to skate away with that stupid laugh of his. Due to his unfounded playoff cockiness, we saw who laughed last that series.

I don’t want our most skilled players to fight and risk injuries, but when being bullied I’d like him to at least show some feistiness and get in the face of his opponent. At such time all his teammates on ice should jump in to protect him. Turning away with a murky smile gets him and the team no respect and only invites more bullying. Unfortunately his teammates are not programmed for ‘team toughness “.

The only time he responded was against a Swede and maybe he thought all Swede players are soft just like his teammate.

Some wise hockey man once said that a hockey team plays in the image of the GM. In Leafs’ case they played under Dubas with more flashiness and less substance. They avoided confrontations and just wanted to finish the game safely. In the process they got intimidated and didn’t even know it.

I believe the main reason Treliving signed Reeves (to a lesser degree Domi and Bertuzzi) was to show Matthews that there’ll be better protections for him and hoped that could help to extend his contract.

My favourite was when one opposing player was mouthing off to Matthews and he leaned backwards to see what the name was on the back of the guy's jersey. As if to say "who are you?".

The Leaf's captain is also mild mannered.

I like Shea Weber (now retired?). He would nail you to the boards if you took liberty with one of his players.

I wonder how much input Keefe had in the new members of the coaching staff. One of them may be his future replacement.

should we give up Nylander to get Erik Karlsson ?
That would give them Rielly, Klingberg, and Karlsson. 3 D with offense but no defense. This may work.
